I was not completely convinced of the «Position-independence» because the heterotopia seems to abide to rostrocaudal and mediolateral axes of cell types, connectivity and function as the cortex above. Hence the «organization-independence»

This is the most interesting paper I have read in a while. The organization of a neural system (nucleus, layer or whatever) does not matter for function as long as it contains the right cell types connected the right way. Thanks to @gquattrocolo.bsky.social for inviting me to her Journal Club

Caricature of Wallace, including the words “After you, Mr. Darwin, kind sir.” By David Hughes for the New Yorker.
Alfred Russel Wallace born OTD in 1823.
He said he shared with Darwin “an intense interest in … the variety [of living things] that catches the eye of the observer even among those which are very much alike, but which are soon found to differ in several distinct characters.”

I just started this nice book by Ivan Soltesz. I found out about it by chance after a brief chat with Ariel Agmon and I am so happy to find Ernst Mayr all over a book on the diversity of interneurons!

Veldig interessant bok om Alfred Russel Wallace. Boken forteller om de forskjellige sider av en veldig interessant mann som oppdaget naturlig utvalg, ble opptatt med spiritisme og med sosiale problemer

#QuattrocoloLab preprint out 👇! We explored changes in the proteome of hippocampal and dentate gyrus growth cones at early postnatal stages. We see that at P1 growth cones from the two subregions are very similar, but start to diverge from P3, with HP growth cones maturing earlier then DG ones.

The writing style is so understated compared to today’s claims. But also: we just send an idea, please publish while we work on the data.
The paper by Cobbs and Comfort describes the role played by Franklin.

It’s a very good episode that makes justice to Buffon. I was surprised at first since he went a bit forgotten. They even mentioned his evolutionary ideas!

All Nobel Prizes 2025
The Nobel Prizes are awarded to those that have conferred the greated benefit to humankind.
Immunology is such a beautiful field! It was just recognized with another Nobel prize.
Richard Lewontin included it (“mechanisms of self-recognition”) in the five properties defining living organisms.

Basket cells, parvalbumin expressing or fast-spiking neurons, names that emphasize different properties of the same type. However they are not all the same, like these in the mouse barrel cortex: one has axon in its layer; the other sends axon to other layers
Both are very beautiful

Interesting passage. Buffon starts with a jab at the idea of classification by means of reducing beings to an ideal form. Are we, cell typers, exaggerating in splitting the transcriptomic dendrograms?
This reminds me of Agmon’s review
