Violent crime drops by 4.5 percent in 2024: FBI data Violent crime declined by 4.5 percent in 2024, according to an FBI report released Tuesday. The 2024 drop in violent crime follows a 3 percent drop the year before and continues a general downward …

Contrary to the assertions of some politicians, the data continues to show a decrease in violent crime nationally year-on-year.

Congress can help continue this positive trend by passing proven recidivism reduction policies like second chance initiatives.

In Reese v. United States, we argue that judge-made theories of criminal liability pose grave danger that persons will be subject to criminal charges and punishment without fair warning that their conduct violates the law.

In a recent 5-4 decision in Hewitt v. United States, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of our position that defendants who were originally sentenced before the effective date of the First Step Act should still benefit from resentencing.

This is a major victory for fairer sentencing.

Today is #Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. It is a day to recognize freedom and to reflect on and acknowledge the racism, injustice, and slavery that still exists in our nation's institutions and criminal legal system.

But Florida is now prosecuting these individuals after the state issued them voter cards and permitted voting in 2020.

Rescissions Bill and HALT Fentanyl Act in the House, Nominees in the Senate, Committee Rolling Out OBBBA Recommendations Jason Pye - Vice President, Due Process Institute

"The HALT Fentanyl Act makes the classwide scheduling of fentanyl-related substances (FRS) permanent. There are FRS that have some potential benefits and aren’t harmful. This bill would impede research of those FRS and is a horrible way to make policy."

πŸ‘ Huge news from the Bureau of Prisons with the expansion of home confinement under the First Step Act and Second Chance Act.

Home confinement helps provide second chances to those who have paid their debt to society and are ready to safely return to their communities.

When prosecutors intentionally listen to confidential attorney-client communications, they must prove the defendant suffered no prejudice from their misconduct.

In Hohn v. United States, we argue for greater protections against prosecutorial misconduct.

Supreme Court Rejects β€˜Moment of Threat’ Limit in Excessive Force Suits

ICYMI: Yesterday, the Supreme Court unanimously rejected the "moment-of-threat" doctrine in the case of Barnes v. Felix.

With over 1,300 people killed by police last year, we hope this decision will lead to more accountability for law enforcement.

We are glad to see the executive branch begin to address the long-standing issue of overcriminalization.

We hope Congress will build on this momentum and advance the bipartisan Count the Crimes to Cut Act (H.R.2159).

Earlier this year, we joined with Justice Action Network,
@famm.org, and @rstreet.bsky.social in a letter urging opposition to the bill.

We applaud the legislature for rejecting a policy that prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation at a steep cost to taxpayers and overburdened prisons.
