The semester starts tomorrow. I’ll update this thread with teachings and discussions about each book as we discuss them throughout the semester! I’m missing a few that are in transit or on pre-order but about 18 books this semester for two classes and then a workshop that only has one. #booksky

In reading our heritage, you find a love and trust instilled in you. We have always been the underdogs, always been attacked. Still, the work endures and there are those that built this world for us and it is our job to continue the work. Bless the work.

Today, #dogyard debuted our classical section. In my intro, I identified the importance of literary heritage. It truly means the world to me to know that I am apart of something larger than myself. With the arts being attacked, it is important to think of the past and the future we CAN build.

So blessed for the reception. This mag is only a month and a half old and was only an idea that started in April. A great and dedicated staff that truly cares about literature and the work that we do. Love love love the #writingcommunity.

Constant work this summer and I cannot exaggerate the amount of books I bought for class this week. I’ll post what a semester in an #MFA program looks like soon. Check out what we’re doing at @dogyardmag.com because we have a lot of posts up soon!

I’m heartbroken to hear of the passing of Andrea Gibson. I’m blessed for the door they opened and paved the way for Spoken Word and performance poets. Andrea’s work in Button Poetry was a god-send for my teenage years and really allowed me to see this light that we all work in. Thank you, Andrea.

There’s so much power in a single poem that the heat that you’ve built can really explode throughout!! I’m currently having to redo the syntax and making it more direct which is challenging. Feels like I am entirely rewriting everything but it’s a book! Each voice sings but the choir captivates.

Listen, I know it’s an art form. BUT! Ordering poems is the most bureaucratic process of writing. I’m at this step and it makes me want to NEVER WRITE AGAIN haha. Bless all y’all who have multiple books, I’m drowning in # 1

Just had a conversation about poetry so enlightening that I feel like I got beat up continuously for 45 years. But hey! I give my first live poetry reading in years next week!

Geffrey Davis ends every class with the quote “Get your breath back” which is very funny in context. I wonder if that quip inspired this poem.

Grateful to have had Joy Priest speak to my class- I’ll give you the advice she departed with. “There’s a child in you that loved reading, tap into that.”

Constantly inspired by the timing poets can work in. I went two years creating 8 poems and have wrote 60 in the span of a few months. The body is so often a well, waiting.

I’m reading The Art of Syntax after a professor recommended it to me. WOW! I love being reminded how centrical music is to poetry, language, and communication. I love love love.

What’s more exciting to me as an editor than under 30 debut lists? A poet who returns with something exquisite after a decade of silence. Books that take years to discover their shape, not more-of-the-same sequels to best sellers. Poets who reinvent themselves because life has reinvented them.
