As @indubioproreto.bsky.social pointed out a few days ago, there is some interesting data from the Federal Returning Office in Germany on the age and gender divides in the general election. A few points stand out: 1) The AfD performs well across all age groups, with the exception of the oldest. 1/3

Thanks Ansgar! And yes, the Tocqueville paradox seems like a powerful lens. Teaching @mafaalani.bsky.social „integration paradox“ actually sparked the idea to apply it to gender gaps.

Is there a growing gender divide among young adults in regard to ideological left–right self-placement? Evidence from 32 European countries Abstract. Growing gender differences in political ideology among young people are a major concern because of their potential long-term societal implication

Also new 👉: Great paper by @hudde.bsky.social + @nennstielr.bsky.social 👏
They track left-right gender differences across 32 countries and find a stable gap in Germany.
A strong complement to my analysis – and more support for the Tocqueville paradox.

Findings 📊
→ Gender gap in socio-cultural attitudes has doubled among the youngest cohorts
→ Young women = most progressive group
→ Young men = remain as conservative as older cohorts
→ Fairness perceptions are key to understanding this divide

Why is the gender gap growing?
Using original survey data from Germany, I take a cohort-based look at socio-cultural attitudes by gender – and propose theoretical explanations for the emerging divide.

Class consciousness still shapes voting, but in a different way than in the past. That's the key finding of a study with @thomaslux.bsky.social now out in English.

We chart how class identity, interests and status link with voting for the left and right in Germany. A🧵
