Why I am opposed to the use of LLM "AI" * It is unethical * all of the commercial LLM models rely on intellectual property theft to train their models * there is no consent - there is no way to opt out of having your data used to train LLM models * I don't trust that [company] intellectual property isn't being stolen by the LLM models in use by employees - LLM companies have done nothing to earn our trust * It is bad for the environment * "AI" datacenters consume inordinate amounts of power contributing to global warming/climate change * power bills in places with "AI" datacenters nearby are roughly 230% larger than they were 5 years ago * we don't actually know how much power the current models consume, since they no longer release numbers, but when OpenAI did release numbers they were not good and you can bet they would be bragging about it if the newer models were actually more efficient * "AI" datacenters consume a bunch of water for cooling which also stresses local ecosystems

* the use of "AI" tools does not increase efficiency * I have yet to see any study find that using "AI" tools increases efficiency * I have seen a number of studies that find using "AI" tools actually decreases efficiency * There is one study where developers expected to be more efficient with "AI" tools, and they even felt that in the study they were about 20% more efficient with "AI" tools, but they were found to be about 20% LESS efficient, so even if you think you're more efficient with the use of "AI" tools, you might not actually be so * the "AI" doesn't actually "know" or "understand" anything - its whole goal is to return something that is statistically likely to look like a response to the given prompt * studies have shown that a reliance on LLM "AI" tools is correlated with a reduction of critical thinking skills * one study on doctors using "AI" to help diagnose cancer got worse at diagnosing cancer on their own without the "AI" to help We know that an "AI" code review will be likely to include erroneous feedback so using an "AI" for code review will add extra cognitive load in requiring developers to sift through the incorrect feedback and the "good" feedback and as such, I don't expect using "AI" code reviews to actually speed anything up and I don't trust it to reliably improve the quality of our code. In general, when it comes to anything that comes from an "AI", my thoughts are that if a human could not be bothered to write it, why should I bother reading it?

A coworker proposed adding automatic "AI" code review feedback on all pull requests. I said I was adamantly opposed to this idea and he asked me to articulate why. This was my response. (I had to include the second placeholder image to get the entire message transcript into the alt-text)

I don't know if this was intentional or not but it's hilariously on point.
A piece of evidence in game had this compound as part of a clue, it accidentally triggered the translator bot to say exactly what it was about - sacrificing their victims.
