Let's say one of the candidates won the D vote 60-40. This would mean that they'd have to not lose the R vote by more than a 2-1 margin. R's might not have a candidate they love in the GE, but they sure will have one they hate, so any D candidate needs to minimize that hate if the D vote splits.

But in a top 2 election where 2 Democrats are likely to face each other, there would have to be Trump voters voting for the winner. In 2024, 9,276,179 people voted for Kamala and 6,081,697 for Trump, so unless one candidate got ~83% of the D vote, some R votes would be needed.
