Ireland is the most highly educated country in the world, according to this analysis by CBRE. We're the only nation in which a majority of adults aged 25โ64 have a bachelorโs degree or higher. Education has transformed our country's fortunes for the better. ๐ฎ๐ช

Theo Dorgan (l) and Gene Lambert (r) with Seamus Heaney (c).
Image oa a letter. Gene Lambert (1952-2025) artist, aosdรกna member and co-editor of The Great Book of Ireland. UCC Library deeply regrets the passing of Gene Lambert, artist, Aosdรกna member and co-editor of The Great Book of Ireland (1991). Gene was very much the instigator of The Great Book project with Theo Dorgan, arriving to Poetry Ireland as he did with a collaborative proposal to assist with the publicity of In the Land of the Punt (1988) which was published to raise funds for Clashganna Mills. This proposal was the seed for The Great Book project, with both Gene and Theo having a vision to see a substantial artistic and creative venture that would raise funds for their charitable status arts organisations at the same time. The Great Book of Ireland was completed in 1991 and then acquired for the nation by University College Cork in 2012, following a 5-year fundraising campaign which ensured that both charitable organisations eventually received their intended funds. In January 2013 we had a wonderful evening at UCC with Gene, Theo, President Michael D. Higgins, Seamus and Marie Heaney, and over 65 of the original contributors, to launch the acquisition of The Great Book at UCC. Gene served as a member of the Irish governmentโs National Disability Authority since its inception in 1999, and as noted by others, his commitment to accessibility and representation in the arts will leave a lasting legacy.
