My dog lifelessly draped in the ripped gray plaid bed slumped between our door and the foyer
Clutching his body,
I fruitlessly grasped his few last breaths to try and keep them contained in his small chest
But like little ribbons of sunlight peeking through a partially-drawn curtain
They slipped through to heaven one-by-one
My touch was the last hand he felt, at least it was gentle not drunken
Until the body was graced over my fireplace as my mother whisked me away to my grandparentsโ€™ house
Thick, calloused hands from punching down my bedroom door
Empty mourning, you would not mourn for me

dried hydrangeas
By dreams and dogwoods
Dried hydrangeas
Frozen in time
My grandmother's soul
At the bottom of the vase
Is she begging for justice?
Is it my own anger at God?
When dancing in her living room
I brush a delicate petal
It falls
And she is at peace

Melt me down into wax
Light me and let me perfume your room
I don't worship the same god as you
A false idol,
You strut about pridefully
In your damp,
Dark,
Molding home
Snuff out your candle
Let my steadfastness warm you

Melt me down into wax Light me and let me perfume your room I don't worship the same god as you A false idol, You strut about pridefully In your damp, Dark, Molding home Snuff out your candle Let my steadfastness warm you

Candlelight, a poem.

My poetry is usually pretty heavy thematically, but I wanted to practice writing more about the feeling of unbridled joy I experience being autistic. #disabledpoetry #queerpoets #actuallyautistic #poem #poetrysky #disabledpoets #lgbtqpoets

Last December, I experienced ableism from a work supervisor saying I was not "professional," when in reality, I am just autistic. This poem goes out to everyone who has felt inadequate compared to neurotypical norms at work. #actuallyautistic #neurodivergentpoets #queerpoets #poetrysky #poem
