Today is a good day to admire the Vendel Period plate from Torslunda ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช that depicts an armed man standing between two animals, possibly bears. Are they whispering sweet nothings into his ears? Perhaps gnawing upon him while he pokes and prods them with his weaponry? It is a mystery for the ages.

This section is comprised of chapters about the legacy of the vikings and their legendary heroes. As Norse scholars from Boston like to say: โ€Well, in times like these, who doesnโ€™t want to just stay at home and sit around the fire, drinking ale and listening to some classicโ€ฆ

Vikings Never Say Die (Unless Itโ€™s to Go to Valhalla) is one of the major thematic sections found in Children of Tax and Tea. Here, we see that Leif Eriksson died and went to Bostonโ€™s Back Bay instead of Valhalla (or Folkvangr, for that matter).

Bridge railing public art in Kalmar ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช.

This is from the art installation, โ€Ur Kalmars historia,โ€ created by Lars Larsson in 1986 along the railing of Tullbron in central Kalmar. If only all public art was so cool!

New Norse myth uncovered from the Codex Bostonia! This one reveals incredibly rare, arcane knowledge about Tyr and Fenrirโ€™s shitshow before, during, and after an ill-fated dog training session. And as usual, tusen tack till @barbarianlord.bsky.social for the art!

This is is Haukur Halldรณrssonโ€™s illustration of Freyja for his Yggdrasil Norse Divination Cards. Heโ€™s probably best known for his Arctic Henge public art installation in northeastern Iceland but needless to say heโ€™s done some other cool works too!

Haha fair enough. Iโ€™ve been talking about moving to Colorado for years myself so I get how that goes! Portland is great, itโ€™s definitely gone up in cost too but Boston still wins that trophy

Maine is great! Portlandโ€™s a real cool small liveable city.

Iโ€™ll remember that for next time ar Bukowskiโ€™s!

โ€ฆFuthark: International Journal of Runic Studies called โ€The Rรถk Stone and the End of the Worldโ€ in which they suggested that a deeply held fear of another climate disaster is embedded in the Rรถk Stoneโ€™s long and winding runic inscription. Which is saying something.

Joking aside, the 6th century catastrophe is also thought to be remembered in the inscription of one of the most impressive of all runestones. In 2020 four university researchers (Per Holmberg, Bo Grรคslund, Olof Sundqvist, and Henrik Williams) published a paper inโ€ฆ

โ€”winter unending till the world falls apart in a cataclysm of fire and violence. We still remember this prolonged mess today as Fimbulvinter and Ragnarรถk.

As bad as the hostile climate and warfare-fueled dystopia was in the years following 536, at least there was no AI!

It doesnโ€™t get much more dystopian than the carnage that followed in the wake of the climate disaster of 6th century Scandinavia. It was so bad that itโ€™s even thought to have left a mark in the mythologyโ€”

Oh nice! Itโ€™s a fun spot and cool you have some art up there. Itโ€™s been quite a while since last time I was there too (not as long as Lord Hobo) but next time Iโ€™ll remember to look for it. Up in Maine these days so itโ€™s not as frequent for me as it used to be

As if the real world outside wasnโ€™t dark enough already, for Aldous Huxleyโ€™s birthday this week, we add a little extra unease with:

โ€œDystopias!โ€

as our topic.

Ah geez. That's unfortunate it, I liked the place. Their beers had great names too!

Didn't realize Lord Hobo carried other breweries' beers. I haven't been there in a very long time though.
