I genuinely consider Alan Wake 2 one of the strongest written, authentic, and artistically distinct video games ever made. It's not about it being ~perfect~, it's about a wholly encompassing directorial and creative vision that exists only in service of itself. Please play.

"What no, we need you to dress like a tourist and snap photos of a foreign leader with their mistress for blackmail, Ethan wtf do you think intelligence agencies do?"
this is how the author you're defending has framed this statement. i'm never buying your books ever again. you fell for a grift and that's fine, you have clearly made your choices and figured that the kotakuinaction audience is more valuable than people who care about video games
07.10.2025 02:55 β π 94 π 19 π¬ 2 π 0When the shot of Statham deflecting a rpg shot with a baking tray happened, our manager started howling at the top of his voice and another guy jumped out of his seat and punched the chair in front of him.
07.10.2025 09:07 β π 23 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0We became obsessed with it and the fact that every time a new book came, it never any closer to having a release date for like 3 years. Then one day, out of nowhere, the trailer reel arrived. All the projection staff (even those on their day off) came in to watch it.
07.10.2025 09:07 β π 10 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Back when I was a projectionist, we had this book of release dates for movies that would go from locked down stuff in the next year all the way to TBC stuff years away. And for years, The Transporter was in the latter with the vague description "Jason Statham fights everyone!". Nothing else.

Essay-review: Andrew Katzenstein on Thomas Pynchonβs latest novel, Shadow Ticket β brisker than his other work; itβs full of his usual vaudevillian sensibility & addresses his favorite theme: how to live freely under powerful systems of control.

people are like 'what they fear, they seek to destroy' but like, i am afraid of shark attacks and you dont see me trying to destroy sharks. or black holes. or quicksand. or the slow passage of time

For me, this one's the standard, the classic.

That cover of Pink Floyd's "Eclipse", *especially* as a reference to the cancelled Alejandro Jodorowsky production (which led to one of the best comicbooks ever made - The Metabarons)...?
[Chef's kiss]
I don't know if I'd call it my favourite or the best I've seen, but this was the first one to really make me sit up and look at movie trailers as an art form more

Think this first look into Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse altered my brain chemistry.

When this one came on people absolutely lost their shit when Eastwood appeared so call it a nostalgic favorite

GOG version of Crysis (2007) looking to be quite definitive atm!

dunno if i'd call it my favorite but in terms of "biggest gulf between the trailer i enjoyed and the movie i watched", it's probably this one:

I don't really watch movie trailers because I like being surprised, but I do go back and watch the fury road trailer from time to time, I was so hype for the film based on this trailer. I loved the movie as well to be clear

07.10.2025 07:38 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0It's nice when you get original music made specifically for the trailer.
07.10.2025 06:30 β π 13 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I think that's a fair assessment.
07.10.2025 07:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The DC is so much better than the theatrical release it's crazy. Ultimately, I think Balian is the weakest character in the script and the DC doesn't really improve him but it does improve a lot of other things (notably Sibylla).

Some recency bias since weβre going through the Cohens filmography along with Blank Check, but I remember being OBSESSED with the trailer for A Serious Man when it came out
