The Royal Navy were able to spirit away an entire Spanish division in one night!
I saw a similar picture of a US sailor stoking the Leviathan.
Obviously staged: five minutes of shovelling coal would have him covererd in dust.
Hurricane map from National Hurricane Center.
The National Hurrican Center is still up and running.
Otherwise the East Coast would get some very nasty surprises with little or no warning.

Either possibly staged, or taken very early in their watch.
They're far too tidy for a coal burning ship.

Tony Judt's great book "Postwar" has a great section on postwar France, including the Vichy officials that escaped the "Épuration légale."

A lot of Germans enjoyed the war when they were winning; after 1943 the Soviets were heading west and the Western Allies were starting to flatten and burn German cities on a regular basis.
By 1944 most Germans knew they were losing and the Allies weren't going to be very forgiving.
