Yesterday morning I received a text from friends anchored near this event--they were experiencing huge surges of water. Seismic data showed a clear landslide event that the Alaska Earthquake Center eventually located in the Tracy Arm. Happily, everyone nearby appears to be okay.

M8.8 earthquake strikes offshore Kamchatka
A dangerous subduction megathrust ruptures once again
โ๏ธ ๐งช
A M8.8 earthquake just ruptured the subduction zone offshore Russiaโs Kamchatka peninsula. This is one of the worldโs truly huge earthquakes, and a triggered tsunami is currently traveling across the Pacific ocean.
This same fault ruptured on July 20th in a M7.4, and last August in a M7.1.

What does the magnitude 8.8 Russian earthquake look like on seismic stations here in Nevada? Here is a plot showing seismograms from several NV stations. The ground shook in Nevada for over 2 hours after the first P-waves arrived. More info on our Insta: tinyurl.com/jujbkvna

...and a M8.7 earthquake just hit the Kamchatka peninsula. I guess this lends weight to the megaquake advisory idea...

Magnitude 8.7 #earthquake in Kamchatka, following a M7.4 last week - may be largest earthquake since 2011, 8th largest on record globally, #tsunami warning in place for US west coast and Canada - the historic 1952 M9 closely caused a destructive tsunami across the Pacific
