People in This San Francisco Suburb Would Like the Earth to Just Stop Shaking, Please
I like to call them βearthquake infestationsβ, most seismologists call them swarms. Regardless of the name, the hotbed of seismic activity in San Ramon, CA has an article in the NY Times and features USGS seismologist Annemarie Baltay:

2025 M7.0 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake-Triggered Landslides and Snow Avalanches
A M7.0 oblique-slip earthquake initiated about 6 miles (10 km) below the Hubbard Glacier in the St. Elias Mountains about 55 miles north of Yakutat, Alaska at approximately 11:40am AKST (1:40pm YST) o...
Our friends at USGS landslide group have some preliminary results about landslides and rock/ice avalanche that occurred from the M7.0 Hubbard Glacier earthquake on Dec. 6. I remember some people asking about landslides caused by this earthquake. Here you go: www.usgs.gov/programs/lan.... πͺ¨βοΈπ§ͺ

U.S. tsunami warning system, reeling from funding and staffing cuts, is dealt another blow
Seismic monitoring stations in Alaska are closing after a denied federal grant, risking delayed tsunami warnings for people living on the West Coast.
Quoted supporting our counterparts and friends at the Alaska Earthquake Center. The cost of the U.S. tsunami warning and mitigation effort is really a pittance. None of it has ever been adequately funded in any administration, and now things are worse. βοΈ www.nbcnews.com/science/tsun...

For seismic hazard modeling, we refer to these uncertainties as βbetween-model uncertainty.β We also incorporate additional uncertainty estimates when we want to capture the full uncertainty because of the recognition that alternative models are (typically) developed to model mean/median metrics.

Once again, EVERY R1 research university depends on federal funding for ~15-25% of its budget. You simply can't unplug the largest or 2nd-largest source of $$ of every R1 university & expect it not to have devastating consequences for graduate education, which will spill over to undergrad education.

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

Calif. could detect massive earthquakes with internet cables. Here's how.
The same high-speed tech that brings you HD movies could also measure earthquakes.
Imaging identifies a transition to supershear rupture at the Mendocino Triple Junction (MTJ), indicating a role of changes in geologic structure on rupture process. Fiber-optic cables (and distributed acoustic sensing, DAS) may help to monitor offshore earthquakes.

Indeed.
The fallacy here is equating "you shouldn't automatically assume someone is right because they're a subject matter expert" (fair enough) with "you should automatically assume someone is wrong because they're a subject matter expert" (laughably absurd).

The 1755 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Lisbon, Portugal arenβt well understood. New research suggests that large-scale delamination of the Earthβs mantle may have been the cause. Seismic hazard is highest near existing plate boundaries, but it exists elsewhere.

This was NOT a 1500-ft tall wave traveling away from the landslide.
The 1500-ft number has been described as the splash caused by impact of the landslide with water in the fjord. Wave heights in the fjord were very high, however.
