Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.

The Scottish Languages Act 2025 comes into effect today - but its significance will only become clear over time. It's a complex, incrementalist measure and much depends on how it's implemented. My analysis here

A united Ireland referendum must not be ‘another Brexit’, analysts say Two leading journalists from both sides of the border warn against another ‘vague, thumbs up-thumbs down’ vote

Ahhh Project Fear beginning already re departitioning of Ireland! V similar to the fearmongering that appearing around Scotland’s indyref - but strangely it was not as pronounced with Brexit, despite conflation - the status quo’s response to progressive change. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

The Economic Impact of Brexit Other

Still reeling from the Stanford report on Brexit. Reduced GDP by up to 8% and investment by as much as 18%. The UK Treasury would have £40 billion more each year if Britain had remained in the EU. Devastating self-immolation.

Well done that student. I hope this rebellion spreads. University managements are hell-bent on stripping out experts to save money, and students deserve better. However awful my lectures are, they’re 100% organic. www.theguardian.com/technology/v...

People in Scotland want an asylum system that is controlled, that they have confidence in, and that shows compassion.

The Home Secretary’s proposals do none of these things.

We need a humane, effective and efficient system 🧡
