21.11.2025 16:47 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah I see it a *lot* in public facing articles and tbf, that's the language people in the world use, so fine.
But my beef is with a published article (not to be named!) that refers to "shifting between formal and informal speech styles" as code-switching π¬
Sure, both are types of intraspeaker variation *but* the terms originate from different traditions and carry distinct theoretical baggage from those traditions... π¬
21.11.2025 10:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I mean, I'd hope... But the 'one rule for them' mentality is something I encounter a lot π«
21.11.2025 10:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Speaking in a more formal way at work than at home = style-shifting. Switching between English and Mandarin = code-switching.
21.11.2025 10:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I realllllly wish people wouldn't use 'code-switching' interchangeably with 'style-shifting'. It's really hard to mark an essay that conflates the two when they cite a source that literally does the same thing π
21.11.2025 10:54 β π 25 π 1 π¬ 3 π 0We have someone in management with the same idea... "We'll do less with less"...
20.11.2025 14:33 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is outrageous.
Academics/universities consistently take the high horse and ask 'what are we going to do about students using AI?!' when there's literally universities teaching courses with AI generated slides... Like come on.

I argue that language technologies are usefully understood as a type of language management (i.e., ways of changing how people use and think about language) -- especially in the workplace -- connecting critical work on AI with language policy

There's no figures that I can find for UK academia but I expect it to be extremely skewed...

Some of these figures still shock me:
- 62% of Senior Judges went to a private school
- Social elites are 5 x more likely to have attended private school
- They are 5 x more likely to have gone to a Russel Group Uni and *21 x* more likely to have gone to Oxbridge
I'm leading a training session on class and classism for some tutors this week. Alongside my personal narrative (state-educated, first in family, mum with physical disability, dad = bus mechanic, w/c family from Hounslow), I'm drawing on the Sutton Trust report 'Elitist Britain 2025'.
