Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie G. Thompson said in a statement “Mobile Fortify is a dangerous tool in the hands of ICE, and it puts American citizens at risk of detention and even deportation.” He also said “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship—including a birth certificate—if the app says the person is an alien. ICE using a mobile biometrics app in ways its developers at CBP never intended or tested is a frightening, repugnant, and unconstitutional attack on Americans’ rights and freedoms.”

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

One outcome of my quest to become annoyingly educated is that I’ll be like, “How can I fit [random thing I read during my first of 𝘯 master’s degrees] into this [paper that couldn’t possibly be more unrelated]?” And that’s why my article on cyber warfare will cite A Sand County Almanac.

My Wife Cheated on Me - Here's What I Learned About Client Retention
Yesterday, I discovered that my wife of seven years has been seeing someone else.
It wasn't easy news to process. But after a few hours (and one regrettable Uber Eats order), I realized there's a lesson here — not just about relationships, but about client retention.
When I looked back on what went wrong, the parallels were impossible to ignore.
1 Neglect kills loyalty.
I assumed she'd always be there because she had been there. Just like a long-term client, I thought "we've built enough trust." Spoiler: you never stop earning trust.
2 Communication isn't optional.
I sent her short texts like "ok" and "sure." I send my clients the same kind of emails. Turns out, neither group finds that particularly engaging.
3 Someone's always courting your clients.
Whether it's a rival firm or Chad from her yoga class, competition doesn't sleep.
If you're not offering value, someone else will.
4 Retention > Acquisition.
It's cheaper to keep a wife - I mean, client - than to find a new one. But both require consistent effort, empathy, and remembering birthdays.
So what's next for me?
Professionally — doubling down on client relationships.
Personally — rebranding as "emotionally available."
If you take one thing away, let it be this: Don't wait for your client (or spouse) to walk away before you remember why they chose you in the first place.

Zenni’s Anti-Facial Recognition Glasses are Eyewear for Our Paranoid Age These anti-facial recognition glasses technically work, but won’t save you from our surveillance dystopia.

We tested out Zenni's anti-facial recognition glasses coating. It actually (kinda, technically) works? "ID Guard" adds a pink sheen to the surface of the glasses that reflects the infrared light used by some facial recognition cameras. So, only threats like that

There’s a debate in the legal community. American judges will sign almost anything a cop puts in front of them. We should minimize email, yes. But do we better protect client data by using a Swiss encrypted-at-rest service or are we creating new risks by having client data stored outside the US?

I think it’s an assumption that you’re up to no good, have a protesty and corporate unfriendly vibe, proto-Snowden perhaps, might be the leader of the local vegan straight edge antifa cell or might be a crypto bro, but in any case definitely doesn’t wear deodorant

Proton stigma is pretty intense, yeah. I use it with a custom domain so nobody knows (unless they look at headers/mx records, but those are the people who would enthusiastically approve)

This is the story of the government's unlawful effort to deport migrant children under the cover of night during a holiday weekend.

The hacker said they were able to access one of Nexar’s AWS buckets, a type of database run by Amazon Web Services, in which they found more than 130 terabytes of data. That included raw recordings from peoples’ dashcams and GPS data, the hacker said. The issue, the hacker said, was that embedded in every Nexar dashcam was a key to this database which had too high privileges, allowing anyone with the key not just to upload their own camera’s data, but also access that of everyone else. Nexar fixed this issue after being contacted by 404 Media this week. Fernandez-Ruiz said these recordings were users’ private backups.

It turns out every Nexar dashcam came with an AWS key that too high privileges. Which let that individual camera upload its own footage, but also let an attacker access everyone else's footage too. Terabytes of data. Nexar fixed after I contacted www.404media.co/this-company...
