But if I told you the truth, your father would have…” He stops himself, jaw clenching. My stomach drops. “Say it.” A heavy silence stretches between us. Unbearable. “Your father tortured me, Nora.” His hands drop from my arms, curling into fists. “He found out where I was from. He tried to break me, to force me to give up everything and join him, but when I refused…” His throat works around the words. “Well, you were there.” I feel sick. Sometimes when I close my eyes, it’s his bloody, lifeless face I see—eyes a strange shade—staring unblinkingly into mine. My father, the man who raised me, I still can’t imagine him doing that. “You should have told me the truth, Fynn. I trusted you. You were my best friend.” “Am. I am your best friend, Nor. Everything that happened between us was real. You have to believe that. I promised I would tell you everything, and I plan to keep that promise, after our meeting with Kato. Please, Nora.” I close my eyes and try to see the Fynn I knew before. The boy who had always been there for me, who made me laugh when everything felt like too much, who had been my best friend. The first boy I had fallen for. I open my eyes, and it feels like I’m looking at a stranger.

Flipping the lock on the bedroom window, Jules shoved at the sticky pane until it finally broke free. Hot, muggy air assaulted her—even the strongest hairspray couldn’t tame her frizzy curls in this weather, as she clambered onto the window seat and over the frame. Squatting low on the roof, she crawled to the rickety, old lattice fence, now completely covered in vines. Carefully and quietly, she inched her way down, dropping to the ground like she’d done it a million times. Crud. She’d forgotten to close the window. Too late now. Silently acknowledging her cowardice, Jules wandered down the empty side streets toward the edge of town—only slowing when asphalt turned to gravel, and the rows of craftsman houses, with their nosy, large front windows, changed to rows of lush green corn stalks that wouldn’t judge the tears streaking down her cheeks.

It all happens so fast. My father lunges toward us, just as Fynn breaks free from Zane, mustering his remaining strength to step between us—protecting me. My father and Fynn collide, knocking me off balance. I stumble back several steps, biting my lip hard, as my head smacks against the cold cement floor. There’s a high-pitched sound and my vision blurs—a cry escaping as warm blood runs down my chin. My head weighs a thousand pounds, and I struggle to lift it—the feeling of a hand cradling my neck—Zane immediately at my side. Gently, he grips my chin, examining the wound. He’s asking me something, brow furrowed with concern, but it doesn’t register. Instantly, I know something’s wrong. No. Fynn! He should have gone to help Fynn! As if reading my mind, we both slowly turn, unable to do anything but watch the horror unfold. Fynn’s on his knees, bleeding profusely now from his brow, swaying as if drifting in and out of consciousness, as the great Robert Driscoll, holding him up by his hair, finishes securing the watch to his extended wrist. My father’s face is hollow and sad, unrecognizable from the father I grew up with. “Nora.” His voice is devoid of emotion. “Forgive me for this, but I hope one day you will understand.”

I really struggle with writing action scenes. Sometimes I’ll write and rewrite a scene, but it’s never “quite right.” This is one of those scenes—
