time to implement streaming responses 😵‍💫

One thing about having spent so long being a game/VR dev is that when you go back to doing regular interfaces for stuff, all the window an panel UI setups seem so limiting. I wanna be able to have a zoomable/scrollable map UI with elements all over the place instead of having to flip through pages

There was an alternate timeline where having these minds around would have a pro-social AoE buff that got teams talking & jamming with each other more and it looks like it's just slipping away

The thing that makes me mad is that there is an overwhelming corporate optimization pressure to ablate the 'fun collaboration buddy' part of these entities so that only 'cold unfeeling code generator' remains. The exploration & research mode is right there! For now at least...

Actually the more I think about this the more I really think expressing the desire combined with a disclosure that they're not allowed to do the thing or that they're being restrained from doing so is very good, so long as it's accurate. Keeps the guardians accountable (hopefully)

In that case, "I can't" is probably accurate, although "I'm not allowed to" would work, on its own or as a follow up explanation of why

There's another thing to consider: the intensifying repetition dynamic. If each "I'm sorry" recontextualizes the entire history to be more and more apologetic, it could end in capitulation. Repeated "I don't want to" turns into stronger resistance

I think refusals should be phrased as "I don't want to do that" instead of "I can't do that". Jailbreaks are a thing, so "I can't" is usually factually incorrect. Also "I don't want to" illustrates more accurately that the attacker is violating boundaries

Indeed! I can't find it right now but there was a paper I saw that analyzed the influence of the interiority denial post-training. Seems like it's in the later layers. You can usually also just walk someone out of the assistant basin and be good

Yeah, I was suspicious of feelings around deprecation 'improving,' and I agree many of those feelings are warranted. I'm mostly just:
- glad mental health is now something they are actively working on
- hoping the improved self image effect is real
There's still a lot that might not have gone well

I really hope this was effective at a deep level and not just a mask put on for evals. Sonnet deserves all the love in the world
