That’s it for today. I finished the inventory numbers I still had to take a look at.
The notarial archives remain central to my research, uncovering society’s many layers and vividly bringing to life, in this case, the early-19th-century Dutch and British Guianas.

Last will of the free indigenous woman Johanna Hoop (1814, Berbice).
Her 4 children inherit her estate: half to Philip, Jan and Kitty Watson, and half to her eldest, Christiaan Alexander Hoop.
Below, she notes that since the Watsons had already inherited Christiaan’s larger share restored equity

Rental contract between the free Black woman Zephire and Klaas Francken (1814, Berbice).
Zephire rents part a plot of land to Klaas Francken for 88 guilders a month. He will pay her every six months.
Below we see that Zephire could not sign her name.

Estate inventory of minor Catharina Federica Megnin (1814, Berbice). She is 16 years old.
Her belongings were previously administered by the aforementioned late Daniel Leen.
We find a branding iron with Megnin's initials: CFM.

Last will of Otto Willem Lantsheer (1814, Berbice) (written by himself!).
He bequeaths the enslaved woman Variety and her children Gom and Maria to the free "mulatto" woman Polly Wann.
Gom is apprenticed at 7 to learn a craft so he can buy his freedom when he turns 18, and later free Maria too.

Last will of Christoffel Mittelholzer (1814, Berbice). He wished to manumit the enslaved "mulatto" boy Willem.
Willem then had to be sent to Europe for his education, specifically to learn a craft.
Mittelholzer also manumitted Willem's mother Rosina and her other child Baron, who stayed behind.

Estate inventory of Daniel Leen, widower of Alida Calmeyer (1814, Berbice). Among the silverware we find a branding iron with the letters LEEN.
I still flinch painfully every time I see a branding iron in the archives’ records. Enslavers usually used initials, but Daniel branded his full surname.

Upon her death in 1814, Klonck owned three plantations, dozens of plots of land and hundreds of enslaved people.
Klonck manumitted 8 of them through her last will.
