To which, AFAIK, he is (alas) entitled as the son of an Irish mother...

Not true. It's not a fight I've got a dog in at all. You achieving this objective would do me no harm at all. Why would I care?

Only because it's futile. Tilting at windmills.

Nope. Not if someone doesn't live in it. And if they cannot (legally) stay there, they're not living there.

But it's not a problem that stands alone--and it cannot therefore (successfully) be addressed alone. IMO.

"Advisory", is its constitutional status. The sovereign parliament decided to take the 'advice'.

The thing was half-baked because the pro-EU people were asleep at the wheel and the UK has no expertise in referendums. No one watched how, e.g., Ireland, painstakingly formulates referendum questions.

A man on the streets of the UK is asked about the โ€œproblem of immigrationโ€ and dismantles talking points with ease.

It was there for the asking, so what to assume other than it wasn't wanted. (Or wasn't wanted badly enough!)

I'm not sure I agree with you on that. If it was a home, somewhere you lived, then you'd have had a right (a right that needed to be exercised) to stay. Thousands did. I even have a friend who moved to Spain just ahead of the deadline, out of the blue. And he was granted residency.

29.08.2025 06:51 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But if you think about it, isn't it less difficult to change the government in the country where you live than it is to change the law in 27 where you don't?

29.08.2025 06:46 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Just supposing--and I'm only re-using another's label, it's not one I'd use myself--that those "self-appointed [EU} morons" are simply engaging at par with the UK's similar self appointed? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The referendum, frankly, is irrelevant. British democracy is characterized by three critical frailties:

1) An unwritten constitution
2) A sovereign parliament (1+2 alone is already fraught!)
3) FPTP voting.

It's a recipe for this disaster when the "good chaps" aren't in the driving seat.

TBH, I don't disagree with your bark. I just think you're doing it up the wrong tree. Maybe you're just having a whinge. That's ok too, but it doesn't tend to generate sympathy.

23.08.2025 08:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You don't know FIFA...

23.08.2025 06:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And here you are, arguing in a small corner of the Internet, with those who would as much support your wish to change the laws of one country, the UK, where you're a citizen, as we oppose your wish to change those of the 27, the EU,where we are.

23.08.2025 05:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Exactly. How much of a home is a house in which you cannot more than half your time?

23.08.2025 05:43 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But if you don't have a right to be permanently in the country where the house is, you don't live in it. It's not your home.

22.08.2025 09:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A house is not a home.

22.08.2025 07:08 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It's not your home.

22.08.2025 07:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Precisely zero. Indeed it is hostility not sympathy that would be on offer. And costs in the thousands of pounds for repeated applications to an obscure process.

19.08.2025 07:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 2    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yeah but it's not a personal sacrifice, IMO. If it were, I'd consider it a good thing. But it's the country's, not just his own dignity that he compromises.

I hear that... But prostrating oneself surely cannot be the answer.
