A tiny Goldcrest, the UKs smallest bird, weighing on average about 4.5g. This one perched on a twig showing the buffy undersides and greenish upperparts. The wings show the characteristic black and white bar across the closed secondaries and its yellow crest is visible flanked by black stripes
The UKs smallest bird, the Goldcrest weighs about 4.5g on average
This Goldcrest was picking small invertebrates off the stems of a tree, they appear to be Scale Insects which feed off the sap of plants
Had a wander around Bute Park this morning, in the hope of seeing a Firecrest. Sadly, failed at that but did get some nice pics of its close relative the Goldcrest, fortunately finding a patch of sun for a few seconds. #UKbirding #birdingWales #birds

More work linking irregular iris pigmentation in gannets to prior HPAI infections: likelihood of NP antibody increased with iris pigment irregularity. Moderate correlations for H5 antibodies.

A Kingfishers zips past the photographer, wings almost grazing the surface of the river. Wings are caught on the down stroke showing the spotted wing coverts
A Kingfisher flies past the photographer, caught with wings raised showing the bright orange undersides
It was lovely to have several Kingfishers zipping backwards and forwards past me on the River Ely today. I was finally able to get on one as it went by - a little distant but great to catch one in flight #birdingWales #ukbirding #birds

This owl is flying out at sea and in the rain, probably why it checked our vessel out. The bright yellow eyes standing out in the dull light.
Back to late October when I was out surveying in the English Channel. Always amazing to see owls at sea on migration - this Short-eared Owl spent a few minutes around the vessel and attempted to land a couple of times #ukbirding #birds

This gull is jet black above and white below, the dark mark on the bill indicate a sub-adult, an adult would have a red spot
How about a superb sub-adult Great Black-backed Gull for #SuperSeabirdSunday these pirates of the seas always look mean #ukbirding #birds

The season for seeing these beauties may have passed but an adult Mediterranean Gull takes some beating (not saying it's the best gull but up there). This one photographed near Portsmouth back in June #superseabirdsunday #ukbirding

A lot of grey days recently around the bay, seems to barely get light at times. Anyway, this gorgeous Long-tailed Tit got close enough that a bit of high iso didn't matter. Always great to watch these close up #birdingWales #ukbirding #birds

This is the breeding and winter distribution for Red-throated Diver - the one I photographed, much more coastal than Common

Yes, quite likely some eastern Canadian Great Northern Diver (Common Loon) winter off the coast of Europe as well as the Greenland and Iceland breeders

This is the same bird as your Red-throated Loon (we just use the name Diver rather than Loon)

Cardiff Bay mega for #SuperSeabirdSunday - Red-throated Diver. It turned up on the 29th (I was away again), really didn't think it was going to stay but got home at 16:15 and was watching it at 16:30 - just enough light for photos #birdingWales #ukbirding #birds

Here's a link to a blog covering the last 3 days on board the CEFAS Endeavour. Not many birds, unfortunately, and some pretty ropey surveying conditions today #ukbirding #birds #marinelife

I'm hoping Bob Flood or Hadoram might comment. I saw Desertas off Madeira 3 weeks ago and this was quite different - but obvs Desertas can vary considerably
