Moth botherer and county bryophyte recorder for Glamorgan
Thanks, there were quite a few fly mines too so watch out for those
03.10.2025 17:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Found one mine in Splott today, on a street close to the first record (Railway Gardens)

Excellent, nice pic of the larva too
02.10.2025 19:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Someone found it new to Glamorgan yesterday - only a couple of miles from where I live! I've only seen it in Wiltshire.
02.10.2025 07:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ah, if itβs my BC address then no.
01.10.2025 19:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0After one exciting Aporophyla species on Friday night (A. australis, Feathered Brindle), there was another last night with A. lueneburgensis, Deep-brown Dart, in the Cardiff garden trap. The first time I've seen this species since I moved to Wales in 2002! 9th Glamorgan record.
#TeamMoth
Nice, not seen either of those this year (in fact hardly ever see Oak Lutestring)
28.09.2025 19:50 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes thatβs what makes trapping so much fun isnβt itβ¦always the chance of the unexpected
28.09.2025 06:59 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, hard to explain! Itβs not a known wanderer
28.09.2025 06:53 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Feathered Brindle (Aporophyla australis) trapped in the Wye Valley last night. This coastal moth has no business turning up in an inland woodland - the nearest records are around 70 miles away on Gower and in southern Dorset. It will be new for VC35 Gwent too.
#TeamMoth
Certainly common in the countryside, just not really an urban moth. I get far more Barred Sallow than the others.
26.09.2025 09:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not had one in my Llandaff North garden since 2013! I usually have to go field trapping to see these.
26.09.2025 08:27 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Shaded Pug?
23.09.2025 17:10 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0No idea I'm afraid!
23.09.2025 17:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Some excellent moths trapped while staying in a cottage near Welshpool (Montgomeryshire) at the weekend, including my first Dusky-lemon Sallow (Cirrhia gilvago) since 1998!

Yes, and the garden trap has been so humdrum recently that it seemed amazing to get all these just a few miles away. Spiny will very likely be local - the actinic trap it was in was underneath scrubby oaks - though it is less well established on this side of the Severn Estuary.

Ypsolopha alpella
Bad photo of Epermenia falciformis
Micros included Pandemis cinnamomeana, Ypsolopha alpella (a scarce moth in Glamorgan) and Epermenia falciformis. 2/2

Heath Rustic (Xestia agathina)
A lovely rosy example of Autumnal Rustic (Eugnorisma glareosa)
Spiny Hook-tip (Watsonalla uncinula) - this one a classic with purplish ground colour and white mark near the hook.
One of eight Anomalous (Stilbia anomala)
A fun few hours with the traps on Caerphilly Mountain last night produced some quality moths. Heath Rustic, Autumnal Rustic, Spiny Hook-tip and Anomalous the best of the macro-moths. Also my third Clifden Nonpareil of the year. 1/2

Larvae could be overlooked as Epiphyas postvittana (which also feeds in spinnings on olive etc) but they have a green rather than pale brown head, and also pairs of small black spots on the thorax and near the end of the abdomen.
06.09.2025 16:05 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One to look out for at the moment if you have olive, privet or jasmine growing in the garden - larvae of Palpita vitrealis feeding inside spun shoot tips. Found two on the olive tree in our Cardiff garden this week. @mikecram67.bsky.social recently reared it from privet in Bridgend too.
#TeamMoth
#RecordOfTheWeek today is Oriental Fruit Moth (Grapholita molesta), found in Bridgend by Mike Cram. This is the first Glamorgan record for this non-native species, which likely hitched a ride on peaches.
Thanks for the record & photo, submitted via www.sewbrecord.org.uk

It really works too, Iβve seen them as the only moths remaining outside the trap when the birds have taken everything else.

17.08.2025 16:39 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks, yes good to see a few species I hardly ever see, as I don't trap in the uplands much.
17.08.2025 16:23 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's common outside Cardiff but doesn't really seem to penetrate the city for some reason...there are old hawthorns up the road and I get plenty of other hawthorn species. It's a mystery!
17.08.2025 16:22 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Trapping on the edge of upland conifer plantation near Pontypridd...Anomalous, Dark Marbled Carpet, Pempelia palumbella and an unexpected Clifden Nonpareil. It looked like some exotic bird when it swooped in, black and white underside flashing in the MV light, dwarfing all the other moths.

After 18 years of waiting, finally got Chinese Character on the garden list! Also my first Palpita vitrealis of the year and a second gen Waved Umber.
