The small Phycitodes at this time of year (2nd gen?) are always saxicola in my experience - at least in Cardiff! When I've had maritima they've been quite big.

Broad-barred White (Hecatera bicolorata) caterpillars on the Perennial Sowthistle my neighbour lets grow on his driveway. Second year running they've been present on this patch. I've only had the moth 3 times in 19 years in my garden trap across the road!

Micros including a couple of Stenoptilia zophodactylus at dusk and Celypha cespitana in a range of colour forms. Also plenty of Notocelia incarnatana (no pic). 2/2

Light trapping at Pembrey Burrows (Carmarthenshire) on a night that was colder and clearer than had been forecast - only 60 ish species across three traps as a result, but some nice ones. Good numbers of Garden Tiger & Dog's Tooth, also Yellow Belle and Kent Black Arches. 1/2

Sitochroa palealis the stand out moth from a busy night at Gwent Wildlife Trust's Magor Marsh reserve, with over 100 species recorded. There are only a few Welsh records of S. palealis including a couple from Gwent.

I seem to have been AWOL from Bluesky for a while. Anyway, here's a European Corn-borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) from last night's moth trap, which was new for my Cardiff garden. Also a rather worn Canary-shouldered Thorn - summer is officially over!

This Dark Umber (Philereme transversata) emerged today. Found as a small larva on Buckthorn at Lavernock Point on the Glamorgan coast in early May. Not a bad moth.

The weather may officially have turned pants but the early moth records continue. This Scalloped Oak lurking in the Ivy-leaved Toadflax by the trap is my earliest garden record by 5 days.

Mompha looks like epilobiella. Pug I don't think quite right for Triple-spotted, might be a worn Grey.

DID YOU KNOW?
It is a little-known fact that Iggy Pop's famous hit The Passenger was inspired by a moth. Before a night out in London in 1977, Iggy switched on his garden moth trap as usual. Arriving home in the early hours, he was delighted to find this rare immigrant moth inside.

They do fade over time but it does seem strange that you are catching so few moths. What kind of trap set up are you using?

I quite like WatDon’s beginners sweep net, fits nicely in a rucksack when you remove the handle www.watdon.co.uk/acatalog/E67...

Also worth looking out for Acrobasis consociella spinnings on the small oaks - found quite a few yesterday on tiny saplings. Opened one which had larvae and a pupa among an 'orrible mass of webbing and frass.

I found one at nearby Merthyr Mawr a couple of years ago, but sadly it was parasitised so no adult moth resulted. The larva looked just right though.

Excellent caterpillar hunting session at Kenfig NNR today. Garden Tiger, Mullein, young Knot Grass, and no less than 17 Puss Moth larvae on Aspen suckers.

Found as a tiny caterpillar on birch in Carmarthenshire, this Yellow Horned (Achlya flavicornis) has developed into rather a splendid beast.

I know the feeling...so many plans are formed in my head the lean winter moths and then the reality of work, family life, bad weather etc kick in and I only manage a fraction of the trapping I had hoped to do!

19.05.2025 11:26 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Ha, it's the dusk and especially dawn periods that are really bad, but if you're just there for the early part of night you might survive. And perhaps you're not such a fly magnet as I am! Worth it for the great moths anyway...maybe you can get there in mid-late June for Silvery Arches?

Probably the time of year...I've only trapped there in summer and the onslaught of midges, mozzies and (by day) horseflies has been relentless!

How were the bitey flies? I've been eaten alive there on a number of occasions!

...the micros were Triaxomera fulvimitrella to CUL lure (several in the same trap as the Large Red-belted Clearwings) and three Nemapogon koenigi to VES lure in the evening.
