This Northern Hawk owl is a rare visitor this far south but several years ago this one stayed around for weeks allowing for wonderful opportunities for photos and simply admiration.

I’ll probably never get to see a Great-gray owl in the wild and that’s ok. This youngster is a captive one ( from hatchling).

A few years ago there was an irruption of grosbeaks to southern Ontario. This occurs when there’s a shortage of pine cones in the boreal forests and birds come south in search of food. Evening and Pine grosbeaks in my yard.

This weeks theme is Feeder Birds

A young Ruby-throated hummingbird came to its
feeder but stopped dead in its tracks when it noticed an unwelcome visitor also enjoying the sweet nectar. A Downy woodpecker had been enjoying the sweet water too. The hummer decided to share.

The attractive Long-tailed Duck breeds in the high Arctic and spends winters mostly along ocean coasts. In all plumages they have extravagantly long tails. These prodigious divers can feed as deep as 200 feet, swimming with their wings, catching invertebrates and small fish.
