I caught myself doing both of those last night. Burned a few exposures on bad focus, then ended up with my finger firmly in the way because I was holding the lens ala SLR. I’m sure we’ll get there. It just takes time to adjust.

Apple plus Sonos house here. Tried HomePods but the interface just wasn’t polished enough for multiple audio sources (internet radio, SoundCloud, Apple Music, etc). Apple TV into Sonos Beam works brilliantly.

Is Tidal quality better than Apple Music Lossless?

Semi serious first world question, I see a lot of folks switching to Tidal, is their artist compensation model any better than Spotify (hard not to be) or Apple? Or is it just for the quality?

But even if we do solve all of these issues (and the many more that are sure to arise) I will take no small pleasure in my nostalgic recollections of a simpler, happier time, and consider myself quite lucky to have been there to witness it.

I hope that Bluesky can overcome the challenges facing a modern player in this world, that federation can be achieved to increase the openness and therefore longevity of this next generation, and that sustainability can be achieved to avoid the need for greedy monetisation techniques.

Openness is key. Open APIs, access to users, and freedom for all to join are the very essence of what made the original platform great. The community built amazing, wonderful things that only added to the depth of the network.

Looking now, at the smoking ruin that's left where once we chatted, played, debated, and shared, and from a completely different version of the same concept (from the same creator) I would take one key learning from the life and death of Twitter:

It was flaky at times, the fail whale was a real and regular occurrence, but the open API meant it was both embraced and extended in ways we couldn't imagine.

18 years ago today, 7th Feb 2007, I created an account on a six month old app* called Twitter. It was still very new, hashtags weren't even an informal thing, and strangely engaging. As the platform grew, it was instrumental in developing my skills through access to freely shared knowledge.
