Is the U.S. Tax Code Anti-Feminist?
The US tax code assumes economic resources in a household are shared equally & caregiving has no economic value. The child care credit covers only a small portion of costs; child care is treated as a personal expense rather than a work-related necessity. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/18/y...

Map from Ontario Storm Watch showing AQI scores in red in the 140-150 mark across Southern Ontario with a score of 174 in Michigan visible, all of which are deemed dangerously high AQI
Via a photo I saw on Instagram, someone who lives in the 51st floor of their condo takes a photo of the downtown Toronto skyline which is mostly invisible due to fog with just the tips of a few towers lime the TD and CIBC buildings peeking out
The lower Great Lakes region has super bad air quality today, and one of the big causes is, surprisingly, melting snow.
The warm snap is melting the snow banks, releasing all the car exhaust & toxins & rotting debris in the snow. Which, coupled with lack of wind and rain, sits in the air as smog

You Should Probably Leave Substack
You should probably leave Substack. Hereβs why and how.
This is a site I've seen mentioned before: leavesubstack.com ; and had others advocate for the recommended alternatives.
I can't speak on any of the platforms, but maybe this helps frame the "space" you're looking at while waiting for recommendations?
And best of luck.

Me, inside an iron lung
"Do you know what it's like to be inside an iron lung? I do."
I redesigned the science communications page on my website in a somewhat... unique way, you might say. I also wrote a little essay about my experience inside an iron lung.

One sale away from 200 sales in my itch shop, thank you to everybody who has bought a zine or comic.
PS - If you buy one, you can share it with pals, it's a PDF, who will stop you? Not me! Get a comic, snag a zine, share with a friend, two people get to read it for the price of one, what a deal!

Iβm going to keep sharing this PSA: although the MMR is usually given at 12 and 18 months, your baby can get a first dose as early as 6 months. They will still need the other two doses, because immunity doesnβt stick at that age, and insurance may not cover it. But itβs protection.

A smartphone is on an end table. It's balancing up on end, and speaking, so maybe it's animate? This is unclear.
SMARTPHONE: Hey! HEY!
The phone is speaking to PORDLEY, who is trying to practice the piano. He looks up at the phone which is addressing him on its own.
SMARTPHONE: I can't help but notice you've been holding me less. I MISS you. I miss your nimble TAPS and SWIPES.
PORDLEY: It's because you're a PORTAL to HORRORS! Nothing personal. It's just...you ARE a PORTAL. And there are SO VERY MANY horrors.
SMARTPHONE: I'm a portal to EVERYTHING. Don't you want to see GOOFS AND SPOOFS? You LOVE goofs and spoofs!
PORDLEY: I DO love goofs and spoofs.
SMARTPHONE: I've got SO MANY goofs and spoofs.
Pordley, convinced, reaches tentatively for the phone...
HORRORS ERUPT FROM THE PHONE. Of course! Of course!!!
They're still out there. The goofs and spoofs. If we can only find them.

Replacements for CFCs spread PFAS across the globe
A third of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) pollution is linked to CFC replacement chemicals, study finds
While ending the use of chlorofluorocarbons helped repair the hole in the ozone, the refrigerants that replaced them break down into trifluoroacetic acids (TFAs). These TFAs are now found in ice cores from the Arctic. cen.acs.org/environment/... #chemsky π§ͺ
