I’m Antonia and I create portraits with embroidery and bead embroidery! Here’s a few I made this year and my current work-in-progress.

I am so pleased that this is turning out! I had actual nightmares that it would be a mess once it was time to attach the beading to the backing fabric.

The bead embroidery sections are completely attached to the fabric without any puckering or other issues. I’m adding some very small metal bugle beads from two old necklaces along the border and it’s adding just the pop I need.

I’m lightly freaking out that it’s so close to completion!

Kind of can’t believe I can hold this in my hands. I’ve stitched together my bead embroidery of The Reluctant Bride. Now to attach it to the backing fabric!

Oh that makes a huge difference! I’ve taught a couple workshops and folks that have used a needle and thread before vs those that have not make for very differentiated instruction!

I don't know if it shows up well, but on this piece I stitched beads over some of the little diamond shapes and in her crown to add a little sparkle and texture. I think however you do it is going to be awesome!

I don't do specific stitches for attaching beads but maybe they exist! French knots and satin stitches in a couple colors and have some of the scales be beaded, or plonking beads down overtop in a semi-random pattern would look cool. I'm excited to see what you decide!

Ooh, gorgeous--could also attach those over classic embroidery stitching for an extra pop and shine.

For shading, I've had better success being pretty limited in my color palette. I have a tendency to overwork, but sticking to a small range of tones has helped. I have a DMC color chart at home--If you let me know one of your colors, I can give you the rest of the gradient.

🥰 I work single strand for faces and try to be really thoughtful with the direction of my stitches. For the scales, sequins could be really cool!

Something about the delivery was uniquely repellent and awful.
