Russian Invasion - Salami Tactics | Yes Prime Minister
YouTube video by British Comedy Russian Invasion - Salami Tactics | Yes Prime Minister

I’ve been thinking a lot about Salami Tactics recently.

This is the Cold War idea of achieving overall goals in thin slices, each of which in itself will not provoke the outrage necessary for serious escalation.

I think it makes sense of much of what we’re now seing.

My thoughts exactly, makes Starmer look weak, desperate with no ideas of his own. Milliband for all his faults when was leader at least seems to have principles and ideas. Starmer just copies Farage and Trump, and betrays his voter base.

Very good as ever from @richardjmurphy.bsky.social If every country in the world is in debt, who are they in debt to? Answer wealthy private individuals and pension funds.

While that is true to some extent, not all action needed can be done without some government input. Made more difficult now some parties want to ditch net-zero rather than sort out what isn't working.

5 year parliaments, unless there is cross-party consensus, always have and always will have short-term planning. Even worse if next government suddenly switches policy as in the US.

Climate plan based on phasing out fossil fuels doomed to fail, says Tony Blair Former PM claims net zero policies losing public support and says there should be greater focus on carbon capture

CCS is not a serious solution

Promised for decades

Used small-scale for oil recoveryβ€”even then, most COβ‚‚ is not captured

Energy models assume 90% capture by default. We all know that’s a myth. These assumptions must change to stop misguided takes like this.

I sometimes wonder if there are dodgy moves afoot to try and discredit Milliband in advance of whenever there is a reshuffle. And is this TBI thing part of that?

To me the Tony Blair institute said quite a few reasonable things but the emphasis on removal over "short-term" emissions cuts, is at best bad choice of words or worst an unrealistic "have your cake and eat it" fantasy.

DO itself is not a measure of forest health etc, but a theory on the principles that may determine the proportion of trees of different sizes in a forest. This theory has the potential to simplify things, particularly at large scales applicable to climate models. Hope thats helps.

26.04.2025 12:11 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Sorry it took me a while to reply. The paper is about the deeper theoretical ideas on how forests structure themselves. DO is our hypothesis on this. The aim is to further debate and discussion on our understanding of forest dynamics, so is one step removed from the ideas you mention.

As a mathematician, I really appreciate "You bastard" in this book, also the assassins' training, & the time travel elements are great. This was around the time Pratchett started writing better plots. This book, plus "Guards Guards" & "Wyrd Sisters" are my faves of his early books.

I seem to be one of the few Discworld fans who like "Eric", for me it's one of the better Rincewind stories as it has more interesting messages like this and an alternative view of hell. I'm not saying it is STP's best book by a long way but I think it has more to offer than many suggest.

Who has nostalgia for mining? The only good thing about it was job security, but the rest of the working conditions were really bad.

Interesting and important. One thing I wondered if any research as to how animals coped during the PETM as would seem reasonable to have expected more frequent dangerous wet bulb events in the tropics? I know mammals were smaller in PETM but not heard/read much else.

I think the answer is to follow @richardjmurphy.bsky.social plan rather than getting into taxing assets directly, which are hard to value

While things are pretty dire right now, particularly politically, it is always better to take action than not. Any reduction in emissions is better than none, the lower the emissions the more we have to turn things around.
