A Bleak Future? Recent layoffs and funding cuts have not only crippled morale among scientists, they’ve also set an alarming precedent for the future of science

I had the opportunity to give my perspective to The Analytical Scientist about recent events. With this article, I hope to give a voice to others who may not have the ability to speak out. #StandUpForScience

Like most I don't know much but I have been starting every lab meeting with updates on the little I do know. There are also important reactions at my institution that folks in the lab need to understand -- like does the Uni's hiring freeze affect me as a rotating PhD student? (no)

Gardnerella diversity and ecology in pregnancy and preterm birth | mSystems The present study shows that single microbiomes can contain all currently known species of Gardnerella and that multiple similar species can exist within the same environment. Furthermore, surveys of ...

We used this same idea in a recent paper in the vaginal microbiome context, and it appeared to pass the plausibility checks we were able to implement (i.e. inferred biomass went up in BV like communities). journals.asm.org/doi/full/10....

A pilot study of metaproteomics and DNA metabarcoding as tools to assess dietary intake in humans Objective biomarkers of food intake are a sought-after goal in nutrition research. Most biomarker development to date has focused on metabolites detected in blood, urine, skin, or hair, but detection ...

Assessing dietary intake of humans and animals is important to understand interactions in the gut, be it host-microbiota interactions or drug-microbiota-host interactions. We showed that #metaproteomics can serve as a tool for dietary assessment in stool samples.
