Wiz Duo โ€“ Book 2 ISBNs Paperback: 978-1-913892-98-2 EPUB: 978-1-913892-97-5

My novella, Bring Me Home, is about women making terrible decisions, but also it has a BUNCH of SF questions in it.

- Who deserves to live on Earth?
- How would you act if anti-ageing made you forever young?
- What if you got a superpower & it SUCKED? ๐Ÿงต1/4

Have you heard the tale of Rob Sardan?
They say his mother defeated the Pirate Lord, and now that monster is after revenge.
They say he sailed the forbidden seas, and climbed the ocean's teeth.
They say he became a legend, and lost himself in the process...

โ€˜Behold, Skallagrimโ€™s army,โ€™ he says, watching the enemy camp, his eyes glowering.
I shiver at the sight. The camp is huge and all around the lower slopes are what at first glance look like herds of sheep, cattle or pigsโ€”animals all gathered to feed an army, perhaps. But studying the scene, I realise theyโ€™re not livestock at all. Theyโ€™re rank after rank of Skallagrimโ€™s beasts: wolves, morhs, slinks, shriekers and other terrible creatures from Mors Zonam or from foreign lands. I take out my telescope to focus in on them, though itโ€™s too dark for much detail.
โ€˜Blinders.โ€™ My heart sinks. Weโ€™re outnumbered by the gawpers alone, but with the monstersโ€ฆ โ€˜What chance do we stand?โ€™
โ€˜We must not concede,โ€™ says Magwitch. โ€˜We Lotharians will fight to the death if need be.โ€™

Hauling the loaded rig, I notice shoe prints in the rain-softened dirt of the track. I stoop, unnerved. Theyโ€™re small, a womanโ€™s or a childโ€™s, Iโ€™d say, but the feeling donโ€™t lift. Birds scatter from bushes like black bullets sweeping up into the blanched sky. Moving on, I pass a tall clump of dense foliage following a curl in an animal trackway and come upon the scene quite suddenly. Stink is behind me somewhere, snuffling in the undergrowth. I was right about the shingle beach, thereโ€™s a fine one. A brook babbles around it in a broad bend while the surrounding trees dapple it in shade from the winter sun.
I stop dead in my tracks.
A slender girl, around eighteen years old, is kneeling at the waterโ€™s edge and bowing low, about to drink from the stream. She is like a doe in a clearing. Nearby, her shoulder bag sits on the ground, a bound roll of fur strapped across the top. I check for others but sheโ€™s alone. Her lips sink nearer to the rippling surface.
   โ€˜Donโ€™t!โ€™ I blurt.

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a black panther in woodland at night. He's looking straight at you with golden eyes. His mouth is half open, showing lethally sharp white fangs.

Book extract reads: I followed the sign and left the village behind. A couple of fields later, the lane turned off towards a stone barn standing on its own halfway between me and the river. I carried on walking along a well-established path. No one else was around, which was probably why three curious ponies trotted over for a closer look at me. I fed them handfuls of the longer grass growing on my side of their wall until they lost interest and wandered off.
There must have been some rain overnight. The grass I pulled up for the ponies was damp, and so was the soil where hiking boots had worn away the turf on this path. No one had left footprints ahead of me this morning.
That made me wonder something else. How had this mysterious dead man been tracking an escaped cat? I couldnโ€™t believe the animal would leave much of a trail, prowling through leafless trees at this time of year. There was no undergrowth where it might break off usefully signalling twigs or crush greenery underfoot. The dead man wouldnโ€™t have had any moonlight to see by, even if the night skies had been clear.

Usually Dan Mackmain would be the first person to pour cold water on stories about 'Beasts of Bodmin'. Now though, a naiad and a dryad have sent him to find something very dangerous indeed.
