It’s just a nightmare, darling. All the children get it. But you’re my girl and Papa’s girl. It won’t be you, you understand? And besides, you’ve seen the work, the progress we’ve made. By the time you’re old enough to be Bonded, well… nobody will have to go through anything like that again.” Mara shifted uncomfortably. The blue light of dawn edged through the cracks in the walls. Mother would have to leave soon. “You mean, none of us, Mom, don’t you? But what about the people in the other place?” “Oh, darling, they’re hardly people at all.”

I've almost finished this, and gosh I'm having so much fun! I'm so intrigued by the background world-building.

I'd like more of a balance between staff/prees/naughty Middles (a key feature of the Chalet School imo), but the peril is top notch and I'm definitely up for reading more.

Just finished before my lunch today. Two quite different but enjoyable stories.
One of which makes me wonder if a future world all now celebrates Halloween on the last Friday of October thanks to Killie's prominence.

I devoured this book series in little more than a week. They were hard to put down, so I didn't.
My only problem is that now I have to wait for the next one.

They’re all coming to her sister Iris’s wedding. Frankly, Dan’s dreading it. At least plenty of other guests will have connections to the supernatural. The bride and groom can turn into swans, for a start. Since Dan’s still a loner at heart, he and Fin have planned a few days away together afterwards. Just the two of them in a quiet country cottage should be nice and relaxing. Dan should have remembered what folk wisdom says about making plans.

Nobody can!” He slammed his fist into the table and trembled. His back ached, and a sickly jab went through his chest. Lomi watched him through narrowed eyes. She shook her head and poured more tea into her beak before setting her cup down and standing. “Go to the hot springs. Now. I will send a medic. Tomorrow you will be taken to the glass houses where you will aid the potting and care of my teas.”
