If this is the best the courts can do, then it's time for all people with even a shred of conscience to stop pretending the US justice system has any legitimacy whatsoever.

The Trump DOJ just basically flipped Judge Xinis the bird.

So look folks, we've been in a Constitutional crisis, but this is what it looks like on steroids: the Trump DOJ saying fck you to a federal court judge.

Not going to end well.

Been fearing exactly that. Though when CNN visited the prison this week, they were told the deportees were being held together in one specific cellblock

Optimistically (if I can be such a thing) I hope that means they are keeping track of them because they know this might become an int'l incident

UPDATE: Abrego Garcia’s lawyers are asking the Trump administration to facilitate his release *tonight* and to send a plane to bring him back.

They’re also asking Judge Xinis for an emergency hearing tomorrow.

They have no intention of stopping and they want everyone to know exactly what they are prepared to do to anyone they choose.

He doesn't "have to be comically evil"

Everyone involved in this at every level in both countries - from Trump through to Bukele down to the lowliest guard at the prison - IS just evil. Chillingly, gleefully evil.

And there is no future until all of them are defeated and destroyed.

Yeah but journalists should have been assuming cops are lying for decades, and instead have mostly treated them as an authoritative source of presumed truth. So I'm not holding my breath.

Disingenuously pretending you don't understand what that phrase means is tiresome. You know precisely what I was expressing: that a lot of people are going to be far less interested in *defending* the institution from Trump if it is actively and spinelessly *capitulating* to Trump

Who cares if they get shuttered and reopened as some hollow shell run by Trump cronies - they've already shown themselves to *be* Trump cronies

The point is that if Columbia is already capitulating to the most egregious possible demands of Trump & Co - literally allowing them to send agents onto campus to capture and disappear students - then the battle is already lost.

I think the guiding goal here is demanding that institutions resist these terrifying and dangerous actions by the Trump administration, whether or not that "helps US higher ed"

you weren't "just pointing out" anything - you were consciously and pointedly replying to a tweet about not letting these squabbles distract anyone from what's happening right now to a real person... with an active attempt to bring these squabbles up and distract everyone

Unless this era results in profound and lasting change - whether that's irreversible collapse, or transformative counterrevolution - then in ten years it'll just feel like another bullet point on the list of American horrors, another piece of grim trivia, another Historical Crime
