14.5mm Founder Optics Alienย Eyepiece Whilst perusing the First Light Optics stand at the recent South West Astro Fair, held in the Norman Lockyer Observatory, I spotted the above in the 'for free' section. I say 'for free', but donations to the Scopes4SEN organisation were encouraged. Having previously been impressed by the quality of the optics of this brand of eyepiece, I figured this one would be worth a tenner (which was all the cash I had on me).

Is this the perfect Astro-red light headย torch? Iโ€™ve owned a couple of red light head torches over the years, and all the while Iโ€™ve been on the lookout for a more suitable one. M y first, a โ€˜Cyba-liteโ€™ did the job for a while, but itโ€™s three modes, starting with bright white, then red then flashing red, each separated by a single button click got annoying really fast.

Collimation anxiety โ€ฆ am I (finally)ย cured? Iโ€™ve written posts before on the subject of collimation (here and here), and I know that I said I was happy with my work, turns out I wasnโ€™t. Not really happy, not entirely confident that it was as good as it should and / or could be. From conversations Iโ€™ve had with fellow stargazers, it appears that collimation anxiety is widespread.

For a little more context ... The diameter of London's orbital motorway, the M25, is just 64-80km ... and the population of Greater London is around 9 million ...

The large crater just coming into view at the top (actually near the south pole of the Moon) is known as Schickard, and is 212km in diameter, and 1.5km deep.

The much larger crater, with two craters within it, is Clavius. With a diameter of 225km, it's one of the largest lunar craters on the near side ๐Ÿ”ญ๐ŸŒ”

Following up on last night's self imposed lunar challenge, to identify craters Aldrin, Collins and Armstrong. I managed them, just. visually at x200 magnification, but only got the latter with my phone (the very small dot upper left).

Messier A measures around 11km in diameter, and you can clearly see the ejecta streaks leading away from it. Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin range from 2.5 to 4.6km across, so will be tough to spot ...

According to my book 'A month on the Moon', {cough} a good way to find the three small craters comemorating Apollo 11 astronauts Aldrin, Collins and Armstrong is to look just below and to the right of the two small craters indicated, Ritter and Sabine ... If you wanted to have a look #justsaying
