Tsunami alerts issued for Alaska, West Coast after magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia The earthquake was recorded at about 78 miles east-southeast of of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green gave a cautiously hopeful update after tsunami waves reached his state's shores: "So far we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief to us." He said it would be several more hours before officials felt confident that the state was in the clear.
