Thrilled to celebrate Emma LaRue Black’s 100th birthday! πŸŽ‰ Honored by Mayor John Kinnaird at the Thurmont Municipal Offices, Emma was born on August 6, 1925, in Virginia. She also has a brother, Edward, who is 101! Emma believes that staying close to family is key to a long life. Congrats Emma!

This community was established by formerly enslaved individuals after Emancipation. The Mountville School was completed in 1888, followed by the Sunnyside Church in 1889. This marker serves as an important reminder of the need to honor Black and African American history.
