In the center of its chest, three sharp talons protrude from its feathers as it tucks its leg in. Its mouth is slightly open, showing the straight lower portion of its beak and sharp, curved upper portion.

A Red-tailed Hawk enjoys a warm sunrise at the top of a dead tree. I love that it was tucking its foot into its feathers!

It's so hard to get shots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets with their ruby crowns showing... I still think they're fun to photograph either way!

A Bufflehead, which is a black and white duck with a rainbowey blue, green, purple, and chartreuse head and neck, lifts its tail as it prepares to dive underwater. A trail of water droplets connect the surface of the water with the end of its tail. The bird is reflected in a distorted way from the rippling water around it.

Buffleheads are so pretty! I caught this one in our pond right before it dove underwater

I love it! Great shot from a phone! That's always my first sign that there might be an owl in the area: a lot of angry sounding birds, usually jays or crows 😂

Surrounded by bright green foliage, and as it rests on a thin moss-covered branch, a large owl with brown and white mottled feathers stares directly into the camera with large black eyes. A smaller bird, slightly out of focus behind it, screams intensely at the owl in a display of aggressive behavior.

A Barred Owl is intensely harassed by a Stellar's Jay, which is very common for owls wherever these jays live
