The viral component of the microbiome has been understudied compared to the bacterial component, despite playing a crucial role in both microbial ecology and human health. We also discovered 478 novel species-level viruses. Congratulations to Jonah Tang on his first first-author publication!

We examined the viruses present in the human oral microbiome of children with severe cavities versus healthy teeth and there was a significant difference in the diversity of viruses present in the groups!

Our findings reveal that the specificity of several FISH probes is compromised, with cross-species hybridization being more common than previously assumed as more genomic data becomes available. #microbiology

A great week at FOP-UNICAMP! We brainstormed ways to get dentists involved in National Action Plans being implemented to combat antibiotic resistance (AMR), showed how to use sequencing to analyze AMR, and also practiced developing grant proposals with the students ๐ณ๐ด๐ง๐ท๐บ๐ธ

The ability to outcompete other commensal bacteria and to persist under harsh environmental conditions could be an important factor that contributes to enhanced transmission in both commensal and pathogenic contexts.
25.07.2024 18:09 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0When Klebsiella were absent, other taxa, such as Peptostreptococcus, exhibited a similar phenomenon. These findings establish an environmental and microbiome community circumstance that allows
for the enrichment of Klebsiella species and other opportunistic pathogens.
Here, we go a step further, and show that across multiple human saliva and nares (i.e., nasal) microbiome communities, certain opportunistic pathogens, such as Klebsiella, significantly increase in abundance during starvation of the community.
