Green background with multiple images superimposed including the picture of a Black nonbinary person wearing glasses. There is also two children's books covers one entitled Marley's Pride, the other entitled Our World USA. the text reads SCBWI the official blog, interview with Picture Book author JoΓ«lle Retener on a Stonewall honor, agents, disability and activism.
Cover of the picture book Marley's Pride, which features two Black nonbinary characters, one holding a trans flag in front of a rainbow at Pride. All shows an inside spread of the same Black characters at a Pride parade.

What does the Mahmoud v Taylor Supreme Court case actually mean? A look at the ruling, its implications, understanding the Establishment Clause through the eyes of the far-right, and why we should be concerned about school voucher schemes with this outcome:

Same style as previous slides. βthe Supreme Court majority isnβt content to choose their own marriage type & respect other peopleβs legal freedoms. Theyβve opted to erase LGBTQ+ children & families. LGBTQ+ existence offends them. LGBTQ+ joy angers them. My response? I JOYFULLY DISSENT. "
Same style: . βItβs time to pivot from horror to positive action. Hate is loud, but love is stronger. Love is the reason for inclusive education. Love reminds us that, even on the hardest, angriest days, we belong to each other.β

All 5 slides have crumpled foil background and text boxes in various shades of pinks, purples, and whiltes, with decorative hearts, QR codes, and "C.S. Wild, Once Upon a Ban." Slide 1 has the picture book cover for Love, Violet, and an author photo of a woman with long, dark blonde, wavy hair, light skin, slight smile, blue shirt. "I Joyfully Dissent: Author Charlotte Sullivan Wild on Mahmoud v. Taylor and Where We Go From Here. By Once Upon a Ban"
Same style as slide 1. βItβs not easy, but learning to respectfully disagree and live in difference, with mutual care for each other, is the heart of democracy.β
Same style. βJustice Alito deems our books βcoerciveβ because of their JOY. But JOY belongs to EVERYONE.β

This is a must read. It's great analysis and it's a great piece about what this does mean, and what it doesn't. Importantly, Kelly calls out that schools and teachers should not obey in advance by pulling LGBTQ+ books off the shelves.

Religion can also be used to support #LGBTQ+ people and #inclusiveeducation. The need for #FReadom advocates to show up is greater than ever.

4. Soft green to blue background with rainbow on top with soft heart framing page. "Justice Thomas suggested that schools βcabinβ LGBTQ+ representation into separate units to make opt-outs easier. But the Supreme Court already decided: SEPARATE IS NOT EQUAL. Justice Alito wrote for the majority that our books are βcoerciveβ because they show LGBTQ+ JOY. Which is HUMAN JOY. Every child deserves books that honor their FULL HUMANITY. EVERYONE belongs at school. EVERYONE belongs in this world."
5. Soft green to blue background with rainbow on top with soft heart framing page "The Supreme Court doesnβt have the last word. WE DO. We can OPT IN to INCLUSION. Inclusive classrooms boost everyone. βLGBTQ+ people and families exist. ...[B]ooks that include LGBTQ+ people should not be treated differently... The Courtβs decision does not require our schools to abandon these efforts. Parents, students, educators, and neighbors can encourage opportunities for learning about diverse people and families by staying involved with school districts, school boards, and in our local communities.β GLAAD"

1. Banner with covers of LGBTQ+ picture books in Mahmoud v. Taylor. Soft image of US Supreme Court building, with illustrated rainbow and purple heart over it, lower corner, image of Violet and Mira from Love, Violet smiling, running away from the building. Footer, image of Love, Violet book, pink-to-yellow color, "Response to Mahmoud v. Taylor"
Soft yellow to rose background with rainbow at top and purple heart. "Love, Violet was inspired by the joy of my own childhood crushes. I was an LGBTQ+ child, like countless children. I needed stories like this one. Readers have shared that finding themselves in this story has delighted and healed them. Children have hugged Love, Violet. Cishet children have asked for it over and over. Children deserve relatable books that include them and those around them at school."
3. Soft orchid background with rainbow at the top with small image of Mira and Violet smiling and running. "Religious liberty is essential. But hiding LGBTQ+ people is not free exercise of religion. It is oppression. School is where children learn how to disagree respectfully and to get along with people unlike themselves. Opt-outs teach children to separate themselves, to fear and reject those they disagree with. Opt-outs stigmatize LGBTQ+ children. I hope parents OPT OUT of opt-outs, so their children learn kindness and are prepared to engage with a diverse world."
