I will continue to be unapologetically visible as much as my and my families energies allow, and hopefully in this small way at least I can help dismantle the big media lie that we're not publicly acceptable, at least in some people's heads!

I have no doubt that if anyone was actually transphobic I'd have known about it – I 'pass' at a glance but not if anyone looks for any length of time – but in my head it does show that the anti-trans media furore is so much tailor-made bigotry in similar ways as directed towards other minorities.

This is all very first world problems, and there are so many people dealing with much worse right now. One thing I have very much appreciated though as a trans woman is that I was not stared at, questioned or in any way harassed through the above experiences.

Having had our drinks we decided to go for our swim – and then immediately two parents with younger children came into the pool - it turns out the spa pool was also the hotel pool 😫 I don't begrudge them finding ways to entertain their kids but it was not quite the experience we'd hoped for!

Clearly standing out like sore thumbs we drew the stares of the other pool-goers as atypical clientele. Perhaps not necessarily anything clocky on my part, but my wife's pink hair certainly made a splash!

Having had our treatments, we then went to have a drink (included in our package, but that needed to be brought from the hotel bar as they didn't have enough available) and afterwards a swim in the pool.

The soundtrack was hilarious. Imagine if you will, a bard, imprisoned and made to play soothing music. One might detect underlying messages of despair and loneliness under the main musical themes. It was either this, or possible to play a game of "spa or soft p*rn" music 🤭

More worryingly, they didn't ask whether we were sensitive to any products or smells that they then proceeded to use on us. I had a pleasant enough time with it, but my wife is quite sensitive to such things and has recently had skin troubles, which she had noted on the questionnaire.

The facials were preceded by the standard questionnaires one gets at these places. Notably, one question was whether one wanted a chat or quiet during the session. Both of us – enjoying some conversation – chose the chat option. (Neither of us were conversed with by the therapist)

Today (our anniversary itself) we had a spa afternoon planned, with facials booked as a treat! Dear reader, we have notes.

So far, so rural England.

Thankfully– as two women slightly on the alt/goth fashion side of things– we were out of the general wheelhouse of what the majority of men out in the town seem to consider. So we were left to chat (as much as the high volume allowed!) but it did get a bit rowdy to the end, prompting our leave.

No attempt at mixing from one track to the next, no tempo matching and wild swings in genre; we called it a night after two drinks having waited for the music to approach something resembling danceability.

Not many people thought much of the choice either as the dancefloor cleared out. Clearly attempting to reel people back in but not knowing how, the DJ then proceeded to execute many whiplash changes in tone over the next hour's worth of tracks.

When we arrived, the DJ played a couple of classic disco tracks– Earth Wind and Fire, The Beegees and the like– but then the music took on a more hiphop flavour. Not bad, but not what was advertised, and in our town where almost everyone is white as proving dough it felt very appropriative.

Having dropped off our brood at one set of grandparents, we decided to see what our rural town had to offer in terms of nightlife on a Saturday. We went to what was ostensibly a Disco night hoping for a good shakeout.

What a weekend! First up; celebrating 12 years married to my wonderful wife, and I'd make the same decision again and again. She's my cheerleader, my moral support and my (figurative) partner in crime.
