Looking back at the entire Hurts/Sirianni era, the #Eagles have always been slower than almost all other teams at snapping the ball, but through 5 games, this 2025 version is an extreme outlier from all of the other 159 team-seasons in this period.

What are the biggest reasons for the lack of rhythm in the #Eagles pass game?

I reveal what the film showed me on Monday morning

#Eagles continue to struggle against 4-man exchange pressures. On 3rd & 13, Saquon stays in to block rather than release as a checkdown, but it's only a 4-man rush (with an exotic spin to Cover 2 behind it).
Denver hadn't run a single 4-man exchange all year before this game.

Just 2 plays later: he just doesn't do it when everyone is clearly expecting him to, resulting in a false start. (2/2)

The #Eagles having to use silent cadence at home has been annoying me for a few years now.
First play: Steen is clearly slowed down by having to do the tap thing... (1/2)

#Eagles keep both Saquon & Goedert in to block on 3rd & 8 against what turns out to be a 3-man rush (so 7 blocking 3), leaving Denver w/8 guys to cover 3 routes.

This has been a pattern...

Eagles % of dropbacks w/all 5 in route:
2024 : 73% (15th)
2025 : 58% (32nd) ⬅️⬅️⬅️

Playing with twins (2 WRs) to one side and a double nub (both TEs in-line) on the other worked early for the #Eagles. Denver was playing man on the WR side and trying to zone the other side, leaving Calcaterra in particular wide open at times. Eagles abandoned this approach later

#Eagles used 12 personnel on 16 snaps vs Denver (matched w/base all 16), including 8 straight snaps on 2nd drive.

Eagles passing success rate...
in 12 personnel: 8/11 (73%)
in 11 personnel: 13/39 (33%)

Calcaterra injury played a role, but #Eagles abandoned 12p in the 4th Qtr.

The Broncos were one of four teams in the NFL thru 4 weeks who had run ZERO 4-man exchange pressures on the season.

Vance Joseph was saving the fun part of his playbook for yesterday.

For the season, Jalen Hurts' EPA/dropback...
vs. Man : +0.35 (11th)
vs. Zone : -0.14 (30th)

Jalen Hurts
Week 5 vs DEN

EPA/dropback…
vs. Man : +0.38
vs. Zone : -0.31

After a heavy dose of man coverage in the 1st half, Vance Joseph called zone coverages on 13 straight #Eagles dropbacks in the 2nd half and did not give up a single first down during that stretch.

Consistently getting to the line and snapping the ball late was a talking point all week, and yet there was a key 3rd down sack and the massive 4th down illegal shift penalty which both seemed to be caused by slow procedure.

The #Eagles snapped the ball with 5 or fewer seconds on the play clock (Quarters 1-3 only and excluding no huddle plays) against Denver at a higher than any team in any NFL game in the last 3 seasons.
And it wasn't even an outlier for them: 4 of their 5 games have been similar.

Washington (11.5%).

Detroit hasn’t done it at all this year and were 6th last year (6.4%).

Haha yes the team has been ranked 30th-32nd in like 10 different tendency stats in all of the past few years.

To be fair, he never said that he was a wise man. He's just saying that a wise man avoids all extremes and it's up to you what to infer from that fact.

The #Eagles had some issues facing a heavy dose of 4-man exchange ("sim") pressures in each of the last 3 games.

FWIW, the Broncos' defense has not run a single such exchange pressure this season--one of just four defenses in the NFL to not have run one through 4 weeks.

02.10.2025 20:04 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

FWIW, Eagles have kept the RB in to block much more this year than in the past, and not only against blitzes. And that’s even though these 5 in route numbers count check releases as routes:

Eagles 5 in route%…
2024 : 73% (15th)
2025 : 56% (32nd)

Charting the #Eagles defensive film...
On the dropbacks with no blitzing linebackers, there are a few too many snaps on which the pass rush looks like this.

73% of the #Eagles' drives have ended in either a 3 & out or a touchdown.

As a result, the #Eagles are...
29th in yards/drive (24.3)
6th in points/drive (2.84)

Obviously a very efficient use of yards and first downs, but probably not sustainable...

We've talked a lot about how the #Eagles don't throw deep, but the biggest change/issue with the passing game this year is the lack of YAC.

Jalen Hurts YAC/completion
2021 : 5.5 (6th)
2022 : 5.8 (6th)
2023 : 4.8 (27th)
2024 : 5.5 (12th)
2025 : 3.7 (32nd) thru Week 4 ⬅️⬅️⬅️

Cooper DeJean is ridiculous.
Tampa Bay runs a flea flicker max protect post/cross against a 2-high zone. Cooper first carries the post to the safeties, then comes back to nearly pick off the cross--thereby somehow covering both routes on a 2-route concept.
