If you have to get permission to teach in your area of expertise from people who are definitionally not qualified to adjudicate your expertise then you are no longer working at a university.

Youโ€™re working at a state propaganda factory.

This has been a longstanding conversation in the nonprofit sector more generally. It's not just incentives. It's attracting talent as well, who expect remuneration commensurate with the skills they bring to positions.

Really makes you wonder what they would've done if this tech was available during South Africa's apartheid regime. AI-powered racial classification machine?

Once again, the #teslatakedown movement provides a great case study in innovative (and effective) protest tactics. Scholars of social movements take note!

Uni budgets are also automated with internal costing systems that distribute resources according to funding formulas. Like any socio-technical system, they are not easy to change. Even if you could close the T+L Center, you can't easily move that money elsewhere, like to faculty salaries.

My state-mandated Annual Ethics Training is due soon and I'm tempted to just say, "fuck it, it's all ethical now." I mean, really, what good does it do to affirm that I can't accept a book as a gift when this is happening at the highest levels and in broad daylight?

Barnes & Noble to open new Hyde Park store in February A Barnes & Noble bookstore is set to open in the Hyde Park Shopping Center in late February, adding a national chain to a neighborhood well known around the city

My neighborhood must have more independent bookstores per capita than almost anywhere else on Earth. So this might be the very last thing we need in Hyde Park:

The thing about stuff like this is that Trump wins even if he loses. Yes, this is about weaponizing the DOJ against his political enemies. But it's also about delegitimizing the criminal justice system, which makes his own felony conviction look like partisan witchhuntery.

I guess I was lucky to see bands like Fugazi play some pretty big venues for $5. And I remember people getting mad when they raised the door price to $6. But that's just me dating myself. Fin. 8/8

Some artists have tried to get around Ticketmaster but end up playing in really inconvenient and suboptimal places like county fairgrounds. Others have tried to negotiate lower handling fees but you have to be pretty big and important to do that. 6/n

At the same time, their monopoly position prevents artist from circumventing the intermediaries (especially TicketMaster which owns venues (through Live Nation) and has exclusive deals with many others). 5/n
