In my teen and college concert going years, folks were able to buy tickets directly from venue box offices. I don't think that's possible anymore. 7/n

Some artists have tried to get around Ticketmaster but end up playing in really inconvenient and suboptimal places like county fairgrounds. Others have tried to negotiate lower handling fees but you have to be pretty big and important to do that. 6/n

At the same time, their monopoly position prevents artist from circumventing the intermediaries (especially TicketMaster which owns venues (through Live Nation) and has exclusive deals with many others). 5/n

The rent seeking drives up prices to what the "market" will bear while pricing out some core members of an artists' fan base. 4/n

The problem is rent seeking behavior by intermediaries like Ticketmaster, especially when they have a monopoly on the market for tickets (putting aside the real and contractual vertical integration problems they've created). 3/n

Concert tickets by this logic are always underpriced because there is always someone willing (and able) to pay more $$ than some members of the artists' core fan base. 2/n

On the level of pure market economics, he's not wrong. But pricing concerts is a really interesting case of social pricing (not just what the market will bear). Artists have an interest in reaching a their fan base that can't be captured by pricing models. 1/n

The idea that an instructor can and *should* be fired for daring to teach something not explicitly mentioned in course catalog is the pinnacle of the "students as customers" idiocy that's been steadily destroying American universities for decades now.

You're taking a class, not buying a product.

As someone who has lived in Chicago for the past ~20 years, I've borne witness to many of these atrocities. Let's also not forget rampant truancy, grand theft auto, joyriding, and identity theft. Half Acre Cycling is deeply disappointed in the rule change made to ban trans women, and make more difficult for trans men to race. In the past day, we've heard through various whisper networks that USA Cycling did not want to make these changes, but were forced to. This may be the case, but in doing so, you're now forcing amateur racers across the country to scramble to figure out how to include our trans friends and community members in our events.

It's also a slap in the face of local racers, race organizers, and race officials to do this with less than 2 weeks notice. Cyclocross season is upon us, and event planning has already begun assuming the previous rules would be in place. Half Acre Cycling doesn't agree with this rule change. We've been working to make cycling more inclusive across multiple spectrums. It's hard, and slow work.

We will do everything we can to continue to do that work and race with our trans teammates and community members. But if USA cycling is making that work harder, the most obvious way for us to continue is to stop hosting and attending USAC sanctioned discriminatory events.
