One of the hardest things for me to remember as a researcher, a parent, and a citizen is that "schools" are not monolithic, more than one thing can be true at the same time, and that it's important to look for patterns that contradict your initial observations and experiences. In both directions.

All I'm asking for is one real snow day for kids each year, untouched by Zoom. Remote the rest, but don't be a grinch.

I like this! I need to think of objects/exper that don't sort social background/race/ethnicity/geo. I tried once based on songs nominated for class playlist, but abandoned after realizing I largely reproduced social categories. Hope you are well & let us know how you are doing! We miss you up here.

Ideas needed: What do you do in your college lecture - think large >100 - to create a sense of community?

The dream: they get to know 5-10 people they wouldn't have intersected otherwise, talk to each other before/after class rather than texting, sit with new people (we do turn & talk 1x/class)

Again, I’m reminded of a quote by Patricia Graham:

β€˜In America, when a problem is too hard for adults, we pass it on to schools.’

I’m in awe of what schools are doing daily to hold kids & families up when other institutions won’t.

A lesson for ed research so committed to β€œschools as oppression machines” that it can’t see them as sites of care, protection, and dignity.

For the reasons you noted, I worry. I do like idea of a) some shared corpus, b) asserting that kids in all schs & tracks can read challenging wk. Unintended gains: fastest way to get teens to read more out of sch is to give them a list of largely white men & tell them adults are edging them out.

Why Keeping Score Isn’t Fun Anymore

If your students need a reading on purpose - especially purpose beyond the metrics school rewards - I'd highly recommend C. Thi Nguyen's, The Score: How to Stop Playing Somebody Else’s Game.

Opinion | The Heritage Foundation Wants to Send American Women Back Half a Century

Heritage, cosplaying as the Children's Defense Fund: "the default in American culture today is to put the desires of adults over the needs of children." Strange line in a country that still lets kids grow up in poverty.

@jessgrose.bsky.social does an excellent job of unpacking the report here.

Federal immigration enforcement near schools disrupts attendance, traumatizes students and damages their academic performance While federal immigrant agents need to produce a judicial warrant to enter a classroom, they can freely operate in public spaces at and around schools.

Great insights by @csattinbajaj.bsky.social on how schools can support immigrant students, parents, and the teachers who care about them.
