I always enjoy the genre of "sapiosexual" imagery (the search for these was "sapiosexual photo") wherein, like, look, maybe the people photod happen to be smart too, but that is *not* why they are attractive there. To really lean in to the concept it should be, like, Sartre and Socrates etc.

Doesn’t matter that Schumer voted β€œno”. He got the Dem caucus on board with caving. THEN the caucus figured out who should vote yes to provide cover for D Sens up for reelection in 2026, who might have been in serious danger of being primaried. 2/

i don't think democratic voters should have to spend this much time whipping democratic elected officials.

Furthermore public transit teaches you how to live with temporary minor annoyances and cars teach you that you're god's most special baby and your moment-to-moment comfort is the only important thing in the world

i think if you ride public transit enough you learn that most weird behavior is not dangerous, and conversely i think driving a car teaches you that everyone is trying to kill you at all times

How would you describe that worldview?
My father told me something when I was very small to instill confidence in me: β€œNobody in the world is worth more than you, but nobody’s worth less.” It is an egalitarian view that I’ve carried around in my life. That’s why I am for free schools, free universities, free health care, and free babysitting. Because our society could afford it. In America, people think social democracy is some kind of communism. They think capitalism is freedom. It’s not. It’s only freedom to exploit people.

I didn't quit academia, I simply recognised that desire (for a job) inevitably causes suffering (admin, grant writing) and perpetuates the endless cycle of death and rebirth (moving cities for postdocs).

I transcended academia.

Here’s what I said to our teenager and some other young folks who were around at the match: there’s a difference between a demonstration and a protest, and you need both because people are at different places in their engagement with a movement, and there are different kinds of power.

The Disney about-face, I think, underscores something important: however cowardly the leaders of America's institutions may be, at least right now the USA's liberal tradition is rooted far too deeply to be pulled out without a lot of violence.

More violence, I suspect, than the administration has.

the thing about competition is that it only produces losers. people wonder why everyone seems like a loser now and it’s because so many things are competitions.

plus, whenever you see someone who has apparently won something, you can tell that spiritually, they have lost

I recently learnt of this service called Pirateship which gets you the commercial shipping rate for UPS and USPS. The quotes do seem to be much cheaper, though I haven’t tried it myself (but lot of positive reviews on Reddit)

Definitely. imo large deviations is almost always actually about the behavior of the system when conditioned on the rare event. That is generally more interesting and will usually yield probability asymptotically as an easy consequence.
