The problem with Eric Adams is not that he wanted to defuse tensions with Trump. It's that he cut a corrupt deal with the DOJ, it's that he cooperated on ICE. Those are in fact red lines. Having a cordial meeting with Trump should not be one.

It is the job of congressional Democrats, not a municipal elected official, to lead the opposition to Trump. If and when Trump sends ICE and other goons into NYC under Mamdani's watch, that will be a time for the mayor to stand up. If Trump threatens NYC, I'm confident Mamdani will fight him.

A major expansion of the public sector in NYC requires somewhat predictable revenue from the state and federal government, as well as the former's cooperation in allowing new revenue streams through taxes. Mamdani will oppose Trump when he must, but he can't afford to be the antagonist.

With limited powers Zohran Mamdani is trying to defy the hegemonic political economy in NYC that has held, with the slight exception of De Blasio, since the late '70s. Trump or Hochul can each easily screw him, the way Cuomo screwed De Blasio. That may happen anyway, but that is yesterday's context.

Tbh this is why the talking point of "there are 2 million Arab citizens in Israel, and they're treated equally and with respect!" always boils my blood. Any cursory examination of the history Bedouin Palestinians in Israel will show you immediately why this is not true.

your movement has to be like 8 levels removed from reality to think that some of the starving kids in gaza also having serious medical conditions makes Israel look better. it's completely insane. they just think because it's an additional fact it's somehow exonerating.
