I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you.
The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.
Criminals deserve due process because due process is literally how we determine whether someone is, *in fact*, a criminal

08.04.2025 02:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The American Bar Association stands firmly with Chief Justice John Robertsโ statement rejecting calls by government officials to impeach federal judges who issue rulings with which they disagree. For more than 200 years, our legal system has afforded individuals the right to disagree with judicial decisions and to appeal them if they are the aggrieved party. Targeting judges personally or threatening to remove them because they rule a certain way has never been acceptable. Such efforts are intended to intimidate judges and our courts and weaken public trust and confidence in our judicial system. The ABA remains committed to upholding the rule of law that forms the bedrock of our democracy. The courts are a co-equal branch of our government, and they must be treated that way. Respect for judicial independence is nonnegotiable. We call upon the government and our elected officials to cease making statements that undermine our fair and impartial courts and the rule of law.

14.03.2025 01:38 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0We speak today on behalf of the legal profession and its members who seek to live by the oath each took upon admission to the bar. We reject efforts to undermine the courts and the profession. We will not stay silent in the face of efforts to remake the legal profession into something that rewards those who agree with the government and punishes those who do not. Words and actions matter. And the intimidating words and actions we have heard must end. They are designed to cow our countryโs judges, our countryโs courts and our legal profession. These efforts cannot be sanctioned or normalized. There are clear choices facing our profession. We can choose to remain silent and allow these acts to continue or we can stand for the rule of law and the values we hold dear. We call upon the entire profession, including lawyers who serve in elected positions, to speak out against intimidation. We acknowledge that there are risks to standing up and addressing these important issues. But if the ABA and lawyers do not speak, who will speak for the organized bar? Who will speak for the judiciary? Who will protect our system of justice? If we donโt speak now, when will we speak? The American Bar Association has chosen to stand and speak. Now is the time for all of us to speak with one voice. We invite you to stand with us.
