But the book is like, "Nobody knew what lay south of Chicago..." and I'm like, dude--people knew what was there 1,000 years ago. The Romans administered a massive empire with a huge government across literally thousands of miles without even figuring out paper. People are good at figuring shit out.

Ferinstance, while the stored gasoline would eventually run out (or more likely, go bad first) it seems pretty likely that it would occur to someone, somewhere, that bio diesel was a thing, and then you'd have cars and trucks and generators, and once you've got electricity, you're halfway back.

You could always hand-wave that there were "Terrible Wars that Scoured the Land" but we're not talking about nuclear annihilation or people forced to live on very limited resources bc there are zombies everywhere. It's the same exact world, just a whole lot fewer people.

Even if we go with the number 630, it would quickly grow from people coming in bc resources are no longer being produced, but cities would have massive stores of resources, and they would last a long time, given that the demand for (say) canned food would have dropped to .0001% of what it had been.

I did some math: if 99.99% of the DC metro area died in a matter of weeks, that would still leave 630 people--and that's ignoring the fact that there are (I assume) thousands of military and government people who would have special resources set aside for them for just such an eventuality.

But if the only thing that happened was the reduction of the population by several orders of magnitude, I don't see civilization staying collapsed very long, or maybe even not even collapsing in the first place.
