if I’m bothering to adapt a system that much before playing it I’d rather just hack a different system, to be honest. even the full regular polyhedral set is a bit annoying for me tbh

my ranking will probably always be d6 > d20 > d10 > d12 > d8 > d4 because those top 3 are usable in so many cases and cover pretty much anything I could want. the d12 is great and the d8 is useful in a bunch of niche cases, while the d4 is barely shaped well enough to roll

my ideal system uses like 3 dice. the full polyhedral set just ain’t for me! it can and usually does work, but just as a matter of taste I don’t think it’s worth using more than a couple different types

I think something similar is used for Shadow of the Demon Lord! they use it for dis/advantage iirc, it’s very elegant and I think could be applied to more systems

unsure whether or not i should have armour and weapon restrictions. it mainly comes down to the fact i already have something to curb the use of heavier armours -- weight. heavy armour and a shield might take up half your inventory, so it's wise to pack a bit less. im just not sure if thats enough!

6 dice under this resolution method is a 91.22% chance of success. you could put the cutoff at 4-5 dice for an 80-86% chance but that’s really up to you

I’m becoming more and more of a fan of very limited skill lists β€” my current musings have 12 skills that everyone can use, plus a handful of others specific to Burglars, Jesters and Alchemists. it’s useful to have something to cover cases that a player can’t really roleplay!!

one thing I’m a bit surprised about is that nobody has suggested a resolution system like BitD for skill subsystems in OSR games. tweak the probabilities so you succeed on 5-6 and cap checks at 6 dice and I feel like that’s really robust? guess people aren’t looking at newer games as much perhaps!

i think the law/chaos divide is leagues more interesting than the good/evil divide because either extreme can be really bad! extreme law results in totalitarian regimes and stagnancy, while extreme chaos is endless change and destruction. only trouble is saying it like that makes you seem a centrist

none of these are better or worse than any other in a blanket sense, they just serve different purposes, so you choose which is best for your game. neat!

I think the thing that exemplifies this most is skill checks. OSR games range between not having them at all, or putting them on X-in-6, 2d6, turn undead table, d%, treating them like a save, or d20 roll under.

contrasting this with something like 5e, the class structure and unified rolling mechanic make it significantly harder to do anything novel or unique well, ime. dark sun in 2e thrived in no small part because it was able to replace like all of the classes, something 5e just can’t do

the big draw points of the OSR as a whole for me are definitely its modularity and the sheer amount of stuff people have made for it over the years. if I need to do a particular thing, chances are someone else has made rules for it already, or it’s not gonna be hard to make something up.
