We’re a queer, disabled couple doing everything we can to survive in a world that hasn’t made it easy for people like us. My wife is trans and disabled. She’s unable to work because of her health and the discrimination she faces every time she tries. I’m disabled too, working full-time and picking up side gigs whenever I can just to keep us housed, fed, and with the bare essentials covered. We’ve sold almost everything of value just to stay afloat. Each month feels like starting over from zero, racing to catch up on bills before they pile up again and stretching every dollar until there’s nothing left. There’s no family to lean on, no safety net to fall back on. It’s just the two of us doing our best to keep going, no matter how heavy things get. Some days it feels like we’re barely holding it together. We’re exhausted, scared, and unsure of what tomorrow will bring, but we keep trying. We keep showing up for each other, finding reasons to smile, to hope, and to believe that one day things will be better. We want stability. We want peace. We want to breathe again without the constant weight of survival pressing down on us. Every act of care, no matter how small, reminds us that we’re not invisible. That we’re not alone in this.
