Why is global warming a "rate of change" problem? It's happening too quickly for us to easily adapt.
The main reason why global warming is such a big problem is that it's happening extremely rapidly in a geological context--much faster than most other natural warming and cooling events in Earth history. The climate is now warming so quickly, in fact, that it's becoming increasingly difficult for bo Why is global warming a "rate of change" problem? It's happening too quickly for us to easily adapt.

Why is #GlobalWarming fundamentally a "rate of change" problem? It's happening very fast relative to most natural episodes of climate warming and cooling on Earth, and too quickly for ecosystems & societies to easily adapt. Therein lies the problem. www.youtube.com/watc...

I donโ€™t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make whatโ€™s happening now look like childโ€™s play. And people are disappearing.

We now have a concentration camp in Florida.

Stop pretending any of this is normal.

If you claim to be a good person and you're not outwardly opposing this regime, you're not a good person.

Immigration raids leave crops unharvested, California farms at risk

โ€œIn the fields, I would say 70% of the workers are gone...If 70% of your workforce doesnโ€™t show up, 70% of your crop doesnโ€™t get picked...Most Americans donโ€™t want to do this work. Most farmers here are barely breaking even. I fear this has created a tipping point where many will go bust.โ€

Will Trump force America to break up? He seems determined to try.

I just finally got around to reading this new @billmckibben.bsky.social essay on the meaning of place and country, and it is really very good.

A minority of voters elected the presidents and the senators that confirmed 5/9 judges currently on the Supreme Court. That group โ€”ย all nominated by Republican presidents โ€” is now deciding cases disproportionately in favor of a Republican Executive overstepping his constitutional powers. Seems bad!

The left better start figuring out how to weaponize today's decision rather than just (rightfully) criticizing it.

- Go back into Judge Kaczmaryk's court to dissolve all of his nationwide orders.

- Pass gun bans and insist any order applies only to plaintiffs.

We Better Pray That No Unexpected Crisis Hits While Trump Is President Itโ€™s a world exploding with crises waiting to happen. Donald Trump has made us less prepared for every one of them.

If you live in the US, you are in greater jeopardy today than you were 6 months ago. So is your family. So are your friends & neighbors. Virtually all the important parts of the U.S. gov't created to protect us are being shut down, gutted, or marginalized. My latest. newrepublic.com/article/1968...

Veteran photographer Michael Nigro was shot in the head with a non-lethal bullet while covering anti-ICE protests in LA. "It felt very very intentional," Nigro tells NPR, "a chilling effect to convince us to go away."

Other reporters say they have been targeted too.

"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels

On June 6, 2025, the federal government initiated immigration raids across the City of Los Angeles. Protests swiftly followed, and some individuals involved in those protests were unruly and even violent. State and local law enforcement responded. The following day, President Trump ordered that members of the California National Guard be federalized, and thereupon assumed control of those forces.
At this early stage of the proceedings, the Court must determine whether the President followed the congressionally mandated procedure for his actions. He did not.
His actions were illegal-both exceeding the scope of his statutory authority and violating the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. He must therefore return control of the California National Guard to the Governor of the State of California forthwith.

The Trump Billionaires Who Run the Economy and the Things They Say โ€œYou have to laugh to keep from crying,โ€ one Republican pollster said about recent comments by the billionaires on the stock market, retirement funds and Social Security.

"Paul K. Piff, an associate professor of psychological science at the University of California, Irvine, has studied the psychology of the rich for nearly two decades. He said that research shows that as a personโ€™s wealth increases, more often than not empathy and compassion for others decreases."

I don't really care what the "political consequences" are of fighting for the proposition that *everyone* is entitled to due process before they are removed from the United States and sent to a Salvadoran prison.

It's not really a principle if you only adhere to it when it's politically expedient.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks canโ€™t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until theyโ€™re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

The Constitutional Crisis Is Here The Supreme Court told the Trump administration to โ€œfacilitateโ€ the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvadorโ€™s infamous CECOT prison. So far, the administration is pretending to comply while refusing to do so.

"This matter is no longer just about deportations or undocumented immigrants. The Trump administration's defiance of a Supreme Court order is a new step into presidential lawlessness," writes Adam Serwer:

A man was wrongly deported and placed in a notorious prison with leaders of a gang out to get him.

Anyone with an ounce of basic human decency would fix the mistake and return that man to the United States
