In search of bad vibes
A mood of boiling discontentment in Britain is the subject of daily news - but where is the evidence that it even exists?
Why are we hooked on bad vibes when they don't reflect reality?
I took a deep-dive into the data, in search of what is really going on.

When people find out how little is spent on foreign aid, they're less likely to say that the US spends "too much".
This might seem obvious, but many would argue that pointing to data or facts is never successful in changing peoples' minds.

I always find survey results like this staggering (almost to the point of unbelievability).
The US was spending around 1% of its federal budget on foreign aid.
The average guess among 1,000+ surveyed Americans was 26%.
15% thought it was over half of the budget (?!)

You mean the 'European-style "supplementary vote"' that was used for mayoral elections before the Conservatives changed it to FPTP in the (as it turned out, forlorn) hope that it might help them win lots more contests? That 'European style "supplementary vote"'?

this is interesting and balanced research and it confirms my priors so i'm sharing it (h/t @jenvalentino.bsky.social)
but also it makes sense β LLMs speed up the typing part, which often feels like the bulk of the job, but is actually dwarfed by the thinking part. and these things don't think good
