Home from a great day to Norfolk/Herts with Brendon Fagan. Started with White Stork at Welney then Pectoral Sandpiper, 23 Spoonbill and 5 Turtle Dove at Snettisham and finished at Rye Meads for my first Night Heron since 2012.

Highlights were Herts 3rd Blastobasis rebeli (I also trapped the 2nd in 2022!) and Herts 4th Moitrelia obductella.

Garden 2nd records of Epinotia nisella, Yellow-tail and Plain Pug were also notable. #teammoth

1 MV Robinson trap. I’m about 400ft above sea level at the top of a hill so must draw in things flying over. Just on the eastern edge of Hemel Hempstead so I wouldn’t say a great location. Tho closing in on 650 species for the garden

A whopping garden record count of 2,489 moths (2000+ of which Ermine sp) of 103 species. Nowt new but garden 2nd Dewick’s Plusia, 4th Dusky Sallow, 7th Small Emerald and 10th Anarsia innoxiella were notable + of course Britain’s 19th Nothochrysa fulviceps #teammoth

So on Monday night in my moth trap was this beastie. It’s a female Nothochrysa fulviceps or Red-headed Lacewing. Turns out from current records it’s about the 19th for Britain! How ironic that the rarest thing to grace my moth trap isn’t a moth 😂

Though a few years ago I trapped 1300 moths in 1 night. Took nearly 3 days to go through them all. This was part of the way through the night!

Some of the highest are 120 Chrysoteuchia culmella, 61 Riband Wave, 40 H+Dart, 50 Dark Arches and a garden record 18 Oak Nycteoline

Spoke too soon. My son found a moth on the shed ceiling and it’s a new garden moth Metalampra italica 😂 #teammoth

A garden record count of species but only 1 NFG that being a female Four-spotted Footman. 2-3rd Pyrausta purpuralis, 2nd Hedya salicella + Mompha ochraceella and 3rd European Corn-borer the other main highlights. #teammoth

40 species up already with at least half a dozen not recorded last night. #teammoth

20.6.25 a great night with 451 moths of 102 species. Highlights were my first ever Bordered White + Reddish Light Arches, a garden tick Blotched Emerald and just my 2nd ever Peach Blossom. #teammoth

12.6.25. 145 moths of 65 species. Clear sky and full moon produced lower numbers than hoped for but still garden 2nd records of Exoteleia dodecella and Archips crategana + 3rd Buttoned Snout not to be sniffed at. Also one of my favourites Blue-bordered Carpet. #teammoth

30.5.25. 193 moths of 64 species 2 of which were new for me. May Highflyer and Platyedra subcunerea. Plus a garden 2nd Parsnip Moth and 3rd Pale Oak Beauty. #teammoth

Back from another evening visit to Wilstone Reservoir for just my 5th Herts Wood Sandpiper. A Cuckoo cuckooing was nice too. #ukbirding 🪶
