CAIR Calls on Johns Hopkins U. to Lift Suspension of Jewish Student Over Alleged Participation in Peaceful Campus Protest

Not Johns Hopkins University @jhu.edu suspending an undergraduate student (a Jewish undergrad, no less!) indefinitely for peaceful protest in solidarity with Palestine

I will die mad about this. Most of my friends (all under 30!) care passionately about climate change and are at least adjacent to organizing circles. Only one, other than myself, was familiar with the IRA. Just an abject failure of communication and organizing from the Biden Admin

There is also one of those in my neighbourhood! He almost never does national flags though, it's usually the climate stripes or naval flags or such like

Breaking 43 Years of Silence, the Last FBI Burglar Tells the Story of Her Years in the Underground After the seven other burglars went public, Judi Feingold decided to come forward with the secret she thought she’d take to her grave.

I'm minorly obsessed with Judi Feingold, the only one of the seven who broke into the office to go completely underground. She didn't know the other six kept on (discreetly) with their lives!

This is a subtweet of a subtweet, sorry in advance, but Colorado has *excellent* fruit and while that's also true of the East Coast, I was hardly blown out of the water on my arrival here

Mamie Minch & Tamar Korn - The Royal Telephone
YouTube video by Ilusha Tsinadze Mamie Minch & Tamar Korn - The Royal Telephone

Getting an absolute kick out of this 1920s hymn about how God is just a telephone call away. Can you imagine how excited the hymnists (?) of the era must have been? New extended metaphors from every new technology!

The Anna Karenina principle states that for success to occur in a complex endeavor, all key factors must be present and work correctly. The endeavor does not succeed when even one essential element is missing, meaning there are many different ways to fail. It is named for Leo Tolstoy's 1877 novel Anna Karenina, which begins:

All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
This suggests happy families resemble one another because they possess the necessary traits for happiness, whereas unhappy families may have any variety of

The boyfriend and I are watching every episode as soon as it comes out. Alison is great. There are three gay guy contestants and we're split on which one/s we support. Excellent accents. A drag king. Two men who look like characters from Asterix & Obelix. Exquisite designs all around

(No shade on people in STEM, some of the most involved and committed people I know are scientists, but they often complain about their colleagues so I will take a little license to do so as well)

It does :( FWIW, the undergraduate population at my university skews very wealthy, very STEM-oriented, and very...politically passive, so hopefully not representative of where students are in general? Still alarming

I don't think these students are very representative of The Public (like even less so than most college students) but yeah, I have the distinct impression it's not widely known among, like, under-30s

due to Reasons we ended up talking about Abu Ghraib in class today and exactly zero (0) of my students had heard of it. I told them to read about it (not look at images) and also to look up the art of Muhammad al-Mansi, who was imprisoned in Guantanamo. This is a piece of his that moves me:

Will not compromise on: coffee, boots/outdoor gear, indoor clothing if and when I buy it (which I haven't in quite a while), food in general tbh
Will compromise on (even actively sabotage myself wrt): skincare, electronics, furniture, comfort traveling

I am extremely grateful that my own experience of the "gifted" program in elementary school was that they forgot it existed until 5th grade, at which point we spent an hour every week with a cranky communist teacher who had us write short essays about theology, banking, multiplication, etc

Meditations in an Emergency
By Cameron Awkward-Rich
I wake up & it breaks my heart. I draw the blinds & the thrill of rain breaks my heart. I go outside. I ride the train, walk among the buildings, men in Monday suits. The flight of doves, the city of tents beneath the underpass, the huddled mass, old women hawking roses, & children all of them, break my heart. There’s a dream I have in which I love the world. I run from end to end like fingers through her hair. There are no borders, only wind. Like you, I was born. Like you, I was raised in the institution of dreaming. Hand on my heart. Hand on my stupid heart.
